SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 37

COMMENDATIONS. Commends Southern University and recognizes Wednesday, April
22, 2015, as Southern University Day at Louisiana State Capitol.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To commend Southern University and to recognize Wednesday, April 22, 2015, as Southern
3 University Day at the Louisiana State Capitol.
4 WHEREAS, Southern University is celebrating its one hundred thirty-fifth year of
5 excellence in higher education; and
6 WHEREAS, in 1880, the university began in New Orleans with twelve students, five
7 faculty members, and a ten thousand dollar budget, and the university was relocated to Baton
8 Rouge in 1914; and
9 WHEREAS, the Southern University System has risen to become one of the
10 country's premier historically black institutions, offering numerous degree programs ranging
11 from certificates to doctorates; and
12 WHEREAS, the Southern University System has a statewide presence with campuses
13 in Baton Rouge, consisting of the main campus, the Law Center, and the Agricultural
14 Research and Extension Center; New Orleans; and Shreveport; and
15 WHEREAS, the Southern University System holds the distinction of being the
16 nation's only historically black 1890 land-grant university system; and
17 WHEREAS, the system boasts more than one hundred thousand graduates, and
18 Southern's alumni have gone on to make significant contributions to their chosen professions

1 throughout the state, nation, and world; and
2 WHEREAS, Southern University merits a special measure of recognition upon the
3 celebration of its exemplary education tradition that now spans one hundred thirty-five years.
4 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
5 does hereby recognize and record for posterity the pride and honor that Southern University
6 brings to the state of Louisiana, does hereby express sincere appreciation for its singular
7 legacy of excellence, does hereby recognize Wednesday, April 22, 2015, as Southern
8 University Day at the Louisiana State Capitol, and does hereby extend to the entire Southern
9 family best wishes upon this memorable day.
10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
11 president of the Southern University System.
