Honors and recognizes the contributions made by McClurie Sampson Sr. to Washington Parish and the state of Louisiana. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To honor and recognize the contributions made by McClurie Sampson Sr. to Washington 3 Parish and the state of Louisiana. 4 WHEREAS, McClurie Sampson Sr. was born April 16, 1929, in Bogalusa to now 5 deceased Jake and Curtis Corine Sampson; and 6 WHEREAS, he confessed Christ as his savior at an early age at Mt. Zion Baptist 7 Church in Bogalusa, which was under the leadership of Rev. E.Z. Burnes and where his 8 family members were original members of the church; and 9 WHEREAS, he served as chairman of the Trustee Board, chairman of the Annual 10 Church Anniversary, and was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church; and 11 WHEREAS, education was of great importance to McClurie, and he attended 12 Bogalusa public schools and graduated from Central Memorial High School in 1950; and 13 WHEREAS, he continued his education at Dillard University, majoring in business 14 administration; and 15 WHEREAS, he retired from Gaylord Container Corporation in 1995 after 46 years; 16 and 17 WHEREAS, his experience as a trailblazer, civil activist, and politician spanned over 18 a half century; and Page 1 of 3 SR NO. 5 SLS 15RS-182 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, he was instrumental in organizing the 1914-1964 Bogalusa Golden 2 Jubilee, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the incorporation of Bogalusa; and 3 WHEREAS, he was an advocate for improving life for children and families, and 4 served as chief organizer for the Boys and Girls Club of Washington Parish, and two-term 5 city councilman, including council president, in which he chaired numerous boards from 6 cleanup campaigns, transportation initiatives and creating jobs for the community; and 7 WHEREAS, he was also a board member of the Selective Service Board, the 8 Community Advisory Committee for LSU Hospital, Board of Directors of Avenue U 9 YMCA, Bogalusa Little League, Bogalusa Planning and Zoning Commission, Washington 10 Industrial Development Foundation, Salvation Army, United Way, and Prince Hall Mason 11 Wisdom Lodge No. 123, where he served on the trustee board; and 12 WHEREAS, he was a member of the NAACP, Downtown Development Association, 13 City-Wide Brotherhood, and AARP; and 14 WHEREAS, he was elected vice president at-large of the Louisiana Municipal 15 Association, president of the Louisiana Municipal Black Caucus Association and 16 municipalities, and president of the Northshore Black Coalition; and 17 WHEREAS, McClurie Sampson Sr. endorsed resolutions for the Louisiana 18 Municipal Black Caucus Association urging the participation of African-American 19 faith-based communities in the political process to help alleviate social, political, and 20 community problems; and 21 WHEREAS, he also endorsed resolutions in support of the Boys and Girls Clubs of 22 America, and resolutions promoting reform to correct deficiencies in the criminal justice and 23 penal systems; and 24 WHEREAS, on April 15, 2002, he was united in holy matrimony to his devoted and 25 loving wife, Antoinette Jackson Sampson; and 26 WHEREAS, on Saturday, August 25, 2012, at 1:52 p.m., he went home to join his 27 parents and his Heavenly Father; and 28 WHEREAS, McClurie leaves behind to cherish his loving wife, Antoinette, devoted 29 children: daughters Brenda Sampson Brice, Gwendolyn Sampson Lindsey (Fred), and Kathy 30 Sampson Lopez (Benito), and sons McClurie Jr. (Lorraine), Donald Ray Sampson Sr. (Eva), Page 2 of 3 SR NO. 5 SLS 15RS-182 ORIGINAL 1 Andre Samspon, and Klurie Wayne Tucker; three stepchildren, Karen Washington, Ricardo 2 Washington (Tara) and Toshia Morris (Andre); and 3 WHEREAS, McClurie loved his 33 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren dearly, 4 and in turn they will miss their Paw Paw and he will be deeply missed by a host of nieces, 5 nephews, other relatives and friends; and 6 WHEREAS, he was preceded in death by his parents and loving family members: 7 Willie D. Sampson, John D. Sampson, Andrew Sampson, McKinley Sampson, and Catherine 8 McKelphin Sampson; and one son, Gregory Sampson. 9 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 10 does hereby honor and recognize the contributions made by McClurie Sampson Sr. to 11 Washington Parish and the state of Louisiana. 12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Mrs. 13 Antoinette Jackson Sampson, the loving widow of the late McClurie Sampson Sr. The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by J.
