SLS 15RS-384 ORIGINAL 2015 Regular Session SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 7 BY SENATOR MORRELL COMMENDATIONS. Recognizes the students and faculty of the Lusher Charter School in New Orleans, kindergarten through fifth grade, for their efforts to promote peace and goodwill in their community. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To recognize the students and faculty of the Lusher Charter School in New Orleans, in 3 particular, its kindergarten through fifth grade classes, for participation in the 4 community service project, "Love Drops", and for the promotion of peace and 5 goodwill in their community, state, and nation. 6 WHEREAS, the curricula of the Lusher Charter School emphasizes that development 7 of empathy, teamwork, collaboration, problem resolution, and leadership skills is as valuable 8 an educational asset as traditional academic competence in reading and mathematics; and 9 WHEREAS, "Love Drops" is a creative service project with a primary goal to 10 encourage and inspire others; its aim is to communicate the social ideals of love, kindness, 11 and goodwill throughout the state of Louisiana and across the country; and 12 WHEREAS, Love Drops are cleverly painted rocks decorated by the students with 13 expressions of kindness such as "spread love", "share a smile", and "create peace"; and 14 WHEREAS, seven hundred Love Drops were distributed by students and teachers 15 to Audubon Park, City Park, and other popular venues throughout the city of New Orleans; 16 and 17 WHEREAS, in April, a field trip to the state capitol in Baton Rouge provides another 18 opportunity to distribute more Love Drops and advance the service project; and Page 1 of 3 SR NO. 7 SLS 15RS-384 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, through the use of social media, "Found Love Drops", individuals who 2 find these painted stones are encouraged to share the experience, to pay it forward with 3 random acts of kindness, to post the inspiration, and to continue the social activism; and 4 WHEREAS, initially, the Love Drops project reinforces the learning basics of 5 language and art; however, participation enhances a deeper development of the humane 6 character traits of empathy, sympathy, and kindness toward one's fellow man; and 7 WHEREAS, with this social experience students gain a sense of community, personal 8 responsibility, and self-empowerment; social media feedback reinforces awareness that one's 9 actions may have profound consequences and bring about positive change in others; and 10 WHEREAS, in the spirit of collaboration, the Lusher Charter School has partnered 11 with three other schools, the Homer Plessy Community School in New Orleans, and 12 Momentous Institute and Cottonwood Creek Elementary in Dallas, Texas, to extend the 13 scope of the Love Drops project; and 14 WHEREAS, curriculum goals and activities such as Love Drops attempt to promote 15 community advocacy, humanity, and civil stewardship within the individual, and to 16 empower students that each may find his own voice and continue to have a lifelong 17 affirmative impact on society. 18 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 19 does hereby recognize the efforts of the kindergarten-fifth grade students and faculty of the 20 Lusher Charter School to promote peace and goodwill in their community, state, and nation. 21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does 22 hereby commend the participants of the Love Drops service project for their extraordinary 23 citizenship. 24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 25 Lower School Principal, Sheila Nelson, and to kindergarten teacher, Elizabeth Sepanik, both 26 of the Lusher Charter School.
