SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 70

COMMENDATIONS.  Commends the service and contributions of The Links, Incorporated
and recognizes Wednesday, May 6, 2015, as Louisiana Links Day at the State Capitol.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To commend the service and contributions of The Links, Incorporated and to recognize
3 Wednesday, May 6, 2015, as "Louisiana Links Day" at the State Capitol.
4 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated organization, founded by two Philadelphia
5 matrons, Margaret Hawkins and Sarah Scott on November 9, 1946, and incorporated in
6 1951, is an international not-for-profit corporation consisting of more than twelve thousand
7 professional women of color in two hundred seventy-two chapters located in forty-two
8 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, Germany, and South
9 Africa which is dedicated to enriching, sustaining, and ensuring the culture and economic
10 survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry; and
11 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated has eight chapters located in Louisiana: the
12 Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Crescent City, LaCapitale, Monroe-Grambling, New Orleans,
13 Pontchartrain and Shreveport chapters; and
14 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated identifies and addresses concerns, through
15 financial contributions and as public service volunteers, involving a multitude of issues:
16 child literacy, after-school programs, college readiness, scholarship, and mentoring; drug and
17 HIV/AIDS awareness and health and wellness awareness; partnering with local museums,
18 symphonies, art councils, educational institutions, and corporations to support art programs

1 and presentations by artists of color; addressing economic and social inequalities; and
2 developing public policy leadership skills; and
3 WHEREAS, the mission of Links has been to discern a need and fulfill it, which they
4 have done by donating money and time to charitable efforts, including one million dollars
5 to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and two million dollars
6 to the United Negro College Fund; and
7 WHEREAS, in 2006, members of Louisiana Links chapters began visiting the
8 Louisiana Legislature to support legislation and policies seeking to provide the infrastructure
9 and funding necessary to implement "Healthy People 2010"; to close the gap in poverty and
10 education; to provide adequate and affordable health care to all citizens; to bring people
11 home after Hurricane Katrina; to revitalize the New Orleans public school system; to
12 guarantee displaced voters their constitutional right to vote; to reduce child obesity in
13 Louisiana; to advocate for health care and education issues, and many other initiatives
14 seeking to better the quality of life for citizens in our state; and
15 WHEREAS, on Wednesday, May 6, 2015, members of Louisiana Links chapters visit
16 the legislature to voice their concern and continued support of such programs seeking to
17 enrich, sustain, and ensure the cultural and economic survival of African Americans and
18 persons of African ancestry.
19 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
20 does hereby commend the service and contributions of The Links, Incorporated and does
21 hereby recognize Wednesday, May 6, 2015, as "Louisiana Links Day" at the State Capitol.
22 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to The
23 Links, Incorporated.
