Expresses condolences upon the death of Emilo Joseph "Monk" Dupre'. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the 3 death of Emilo Joseph "Monk" Dupre'. 4 WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the Senate of the 5 Legislature of Louisiana learned of the passing of Emilo Joseph "Monk" Dupre' of the 7th 6 Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana, on his seventieth birthday, April 26, 2015; and 7 WHEREAS, he was the son of Emilo N. Dupre' and the late Ezora Mabel 8 Darensbourg Dupre', and who was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ann Dupre'; and 9 WHEREAS, Emilo was a devoted husband of forty-eight years to Bernardine Porche 10 Dupre' and was a beloved, amazing father to Monica Dupre' Witherspoon (Mohammed) and 11 grandfather to Monet and Montgomery Witherspoon; and 12 WHEREAS, he is survived by his brother, Wayne Anthony Dupre' (Janet), uncle and 13 godfather of Mabel Ann Dupre', brother-in-law of Isaac Porche (Dorraine), Carrie Jones, 14 Robert Porche (Peggy), and the late Albert Porche (Bernardette), and a host of aunts, uncles, 15 nieces, nephews and cousins; and 16 WHEREAS, Emilo was a jazz aficionado, avid fisherman, pipe collector, and stamp 17 collector, enjoyed viewing foreign movies, and was a connoisseur of the arts and esthetics 18 of life who loved the City of New Orleans and all of its food, music, culture and people; and Page 1 of 3 SR NO. 74 SLS 15RS-1202 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, he was an alumnus of Epiphany Elementary School, St. Augustine High 2 School and Xavier University of Louisiana; and 3 WHEREAS, Monk had a passion for community activism and racial equality being 4 a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, founding member and president of 5 COUP (Community Organization for Urban Politics), President Emeritus of the New 6 Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Past President of the Professor Longhair Foundation, 7 Board Member of the Louis Armstrong Foundation, and former Board Member of the 8 Regional Planning Commission; and 9 WHEREAS, he was a civil rights activist with CORE (Congress for Racial Equality), 10 worked for the New Orleans Plan, was a member of the Democratic Central Committee, and 11 was the co-owner of the New Orleans Client Center; it was very important to him that 12 African Americans in New Orleans expressed the right to vote and were informed of 13 political issues; and 14 WHEREAS, Monk's faith in God was very important to him; as a devout Catholic, 15 he participated as a member of the Parish Council of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Parish 16 Catholic Church; and 17 WHEREAS, family came first and Monk always enjoyed traveling or playing with 18 his grandchildren; and 19 WHEREAS, Emilo Joseph "Monk" Dupre' was a man of great strength and intellect, 20 a caring individual who left his mark in New Orleans and the state of Louisiana; and 21 WHEREAS, the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of our communities, 22 and the overall vitality of American society depend in great measure upon role models like 23 Monk Dupre' who mold our future generations into responsible young men and women. 24 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 25 does hereby extend sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family of Emilo Joseph "Monk" 26 Dupre' on the occasion of his death. 27 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 28 Bernardine Porche Dupre'.
