2015 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 8 BY SENATOR CHABERT A RESOLUTION To recognize Tuesday, April 14, 2015, as "Coastal Day" at the Louisiana State Capitol. WHEREAS, Louisiana's coast and its communities, businesses, and natural resources are of the utmost importance to the welfare of the state; and WHEREAS, the health and sustainability of our coastal area is under constant threat from regular tidal action, storm surge, saltwater intrusion, sea level rise, subsidence, and other natural and manmade influences; and WHEREAS, Louisiana's coast can be sustained through the establishment of an integrated system of protection and restoration; and WHEREAS, over the past several years, the state has enjoyed great success in reducing land loss rates and improving hurricane protection along the coast through the coordinated efforts of integrated coastal protection; and WHEREAS, there will be critical items to address in the coming year related to sustaining the coast, including implementing the state's Coastal Master Plan through designing and constructing hundreds of millions of dollars in restoration and protection projects and continuing ecosystem restoration related to the Deepwater Horizon disaster; and WHEREAS, the creation of this system to sustain and restore our state's coastal areas in the coming years will require continued robust funding and efficient program administration from federal, state, and local governments; and WHEREAS, it is appropriate to set aside a special day each year to recognize the value of Louisiana's coast, highlight the challenges faced by the coastal communities, and support the work needed to sustain the coast, an area of the state vital to the economic and social health of the entire state.
