SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 98

COMMENDATIONS. Recognizes Thursday, May 7, 2015, as Nicholls State University
Day at the Louisiana State Capitol.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To recognize Thursday, May 7, 2015, as "Nicholls State University Day" at the Louisiana
3 State Capitol.
4 WHEREAS, Francis Redding Tillou Nicholls was a two-time governor of Louisiana,
5 as well as chief justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court, and is immortalized as one of the
6 four statues located in the Capitol's Memorial Hall; and
7 WHEREAS, a postsecondary institution bearing his name opened its doors on
8 September 23, 1948, in Thibodaux, as the Francis T. Nicholls Junior College of Louisiana
9 State University; and
10 WHEREAS, in 1956 the legislature separated Nicholls from LSU, authorized it to
11 develop a four-year curricula, and transformed it into the Francis T. Nicholls State College;
12 and
13 WHEREAS, in 1970 the college's name was changed once again, to reflect its
14 growing influence and prestige, to Nicholls State University; and
15 WHEREAS, for more than half a century, Nicholls' strong general education program
16 has prepared students to be leaders in a global society and has enhanced their ability to create
17 a vision for the future; and
18 WHEREAS, Nicholls State University capitalizes on the region's geography and

1 culture by offering distinctive academic programs in the culinary arts and geomatics; and
2 WHEREAS, with its prime location along the banks of Bayou Lafourche, Nicholls
3 also provides unique opportunities for instruction and research in the fields of marine and
4 environmental sciences; and
5 WHEREAS, the university has assumed a leadership role in an area known for its
6 agricultural, fishing, petrochemical and oilfield-related industries.
7 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
8 does hereby recognize Thursday, May 7, 2015, as "Nicholls State University Day" at the
9 Louisiana State Capitol.
10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
11 chancellor of Nicholls State University.
