HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 8
BY REPRESENTATIVE JENKINS
COMMENDATIONS:  Commends Dr. Jesse Nealand Stone, Jr., posthumously
1	A RESOLUTION
2To posthumously commend Dr. Jesse Nealand Stone, Jr., upon the unveiling of his judicial
3 portrait at the Southern University Shreveport Museum of Art.
4 WHEREAS, on February 18, 2016, the judicial portrait of the late Dr. Jesse Nealand
5Stone, Jr., will be officially unveiled in the city of Shreveport and thereafter permanently
6displayed on the Judicial Wall of Fame at the Southern University Law Center in Baton
7Rouge; and
8 WHEREAS, Dr. Stone was recognized for his achievement as the first African
9American appointed to serve on the Louisiana Supreme Court; he served as associate justice
10pro tem in 1979; and
11 WHEREAS, throughout his career, Dr. Stone, born in Gibsland, Louisiana, and a
12resident of Shreveport and Baton Rouge, advanced civil rights from the bar, in the political
13arena, within educational administration, and from the bench; and
14 WHEREAS, in 1971-1972, Dr. Stone became the first Southern University Law
15Center alumnus to serve as dean of the Southern University School of Law; he was the first
16African American assistant state superintendent of education in the Louisiana Department
17of Education, where he served from 1972-1974; and in 1975 he was appointed as the first
18president of the Southern University System; and
19 WHEREAS, the portrait of Dr. Stone is a gift to the Law Center from Chancellor
20Emeritus B. K. Agnihotri, Vice Chancellor Russell L. Jones, and retired Professor Winston
21Riddick in honor of their mentor and friend.

1 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
2Legislature of Louisiana does hereby join with family, friends, colleagues, and supporters
3of the Southern University Law Center and Southern University Shreveport, Louisiana, in
4honoring the late Dr. Jesse N. Stone, Jr.; and does hereby herald his legacy of inspiring
5commitment to excellence in higher education throughout the Southern University System
6and the state of Louisiana.
7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
8to the family of Dr. Jesse Nealand Stone, Jr.
