HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 19
BY REPRESENTATIVES LEOPOLD, BILLIOT, AND GAROFALO
CONDOLENCES:  Expresses condolences upon the death of Amos J. Cormier, Jr.,
president of Plaquemines Parish
1	A RESOLUTION
2To express the condolences of the House of Representatives upon the death of Amos J.
3 Cormier, Jr., president of Plaquemines Parish.
4 WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the
5Louisiana House of Representatives have learned of the death of Amos J. Cormier, Jr., on
6Thursday, June 16, 2016; and
7 WHEREAS, Amos J. Cormier, Jr., was born on November 14, 1945, to Amos and
8Lucy Barrois Cormier; and
9 WHEREAS, he graduated from Port Sulphur High School and furthered his
10education at Southeastern Louisiana University, where he received a bachelor of arts degree
11in education; and
12 WHEREAS, he earned his masters of education in education administration and his
13plus thirty in guidance and counseling from Loyola University in New Orleans; and
14 WHEREAS, Mr. Cormier taught and coached at Port Sulphur High School, Delta
15Heritage Academy, and Buras High School, where his team captured the 1990 AA state
16championship; and
17 WHEREAS, Coach Cormier touched the lives of many young people with his
18coaching talents, his kindness, his encouragement, and his compassion; he was named
19Louisiana Coach of the Year in baseball and football; and
20 WHEREAS, Mr. Cormier represented his hometown of Port Sulphur for eight years
21as a parish councilman; and

1 WHEREAS, in 2015, he was elected president of Plaquemines Parish; and
2 WHEREAS, Mr. Cormier consistently explored new ways to improve the welfare
3of the citizens of Plaquemines Parish, and he maintained their trust over the years; and
4 WHEREAS, he was preceded in death by his parents; and numerous aunts, uncles,
5and cousins; and
6 WHEREAS, he is survived by his wife of forty-seven years, Aurèle Moinet Cormier;
7his children, Amos Cormier, III, Arthur Cormier, Mack Cormier, Jene! Cormier, and Meran
8Simonson and her husband Chad; his grandchildren, Roderick M. Cormier and Vivian
9Aurèle Simonson; and a host of cousins and godchildren; and
10 WHEREAS, Mr. Cormier, who was admired by all whose lives he touched, leaves
11behind a rich and unique legacy and is greatly missed; and
12 WHEREAS, with the death of Amos J. Cormier, Jr., Louisiana has lost one of her
13finest citizens.
14 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
15Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the
16death of Amos J. Cormier, Jr., president of Plaquemines Parish; does hereby record for
17posterity his outstanding accomplishments and singular contributions; and does hereby
18extend enduring appreciation for the tremendous pride and honor that this wonderful man
19will forever bring to his family and friends, his community, Plaquemines Parish, and the
20state of Louisiana.
21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
22to the family of Amos J. Cormier, Jr.
