ENROLLED 2016 Second Extraordinary Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 19 BY REPRESENTATIVES LEOPOLD, BILLIOT, AND GAROFALO A RESOLUTION To express the condolences of the House of Representatives upon the death of Amos J. Cormier, Jr., president of Plaquemines Parish. WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the Louisiana House of Representatives have learned of the death of Amos J. Cormier, Jr., on Thursday, June 16, 2016; and WHEREAS, Amos J. Cormier, Jr., was born on November 14, 1945, to Amos and Lucy Barrois Cormier; and WHEREAS, he graduated from Port Sulphur High School and furthered his education at Southeastern Louisiana University, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in education; and WHEREAS, he earned his masters of education in education administration and his plus thirty in guidance and counseling from Loyola University in New Orleans; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cormier taught and coached at Port Sulphur High School, Delta Heritage Academy, and Buras High School, where his team captured the 1990 AA state championship; and WHEREAS, Coach Cormier touched the lives of many young people with his coaching talents, his kindness, his encouragement, and his compassion; he was named Louisiana Coach of the Year in baseball and football; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cormier represented his hometown of Port Sulphur for eight years as a parish councilman; and WHEREAS, in 2015, he was elected president of Plaquemines Parish; and Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 19 ENROLLED WHEREAS, Mr. Cormier consistently explored new ways to improve the welfare of the citizens of Plaquemines Parish, and he maintained their trust over the years; and WHEREAS, he was preceded in death by his parents; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; and WHEREAS, he is survived by his wife of forty-seven years, Aurèle Moinet Cormier; his children, Amos Cormier, III, Arthur Cormier, Mack Cormier, Jene! Cormier, and Meran Simonson and her husband Chad; his grandchildren, Roderick M. Cormier and Vivian Aurèle Simonson; and a host of cousins and godchildren; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cormier, who was admired by all whose lives he touched, leaves behind a rich and unique legacy and is greatly missed; and WHEREAS, with the death of Amos J. Cormier, Jr., Louisiana has lost one of her finest citizens. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Amos J. Cormier, Jr., president of Plaquemines Parish; does hereby record for posterity his outstanding accomplishments and singular contributions; and does hereby extend enduring appreciation for the tremendous pride and honor that this wonderful man will forever bring to his family and friends, his community, Plaquemines Parish, and the state of Louisiana.
