SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 17
BY SENATORS CARTER, ALARIO AND HEWITT 
CONDOLENCES.  Expresses condolences on the death of Amos Cormier Jr.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the
3 death of Amos Cormier Jr.
4 WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the citizens of
5 Plaquemines Parish and the state of Louisiana learned of the death of Plaquemines Parish
6 President, Amos Cormier Jr. on June 16, 2016, at the age of seventy; and
7 WHEREAS, Amos Cormier Jr. was born at Hotel Dieu Hospital on November 14,
8 1945; and
9 WHEREAS, he was preceded in death by his parents, Amos and Lucy Barrois
10 Cormier; and
11 WHEREAS, Amos Cormier Jr. was a loving, and dedicated husband to his wife of
12 forty-five years, Aurele Moinet Cormier, and a committed father to five children, Amos
13 Cormier III, Arthur Cormier, Mack Cormier, Jene' Cormier, and Meran Cormier Simonson;
14 and
15 WHEREAS, Amos Cormier Jr. was a devoted family man and a man of faith; and 
16 WHEREAS, he graduated from Port Sulphur High School and Southeastern
17 Louisiana University with a baccalaureate degree in education; and 
18 WHEREAS, he received his Master of Education Administration and his Plus 30 in

1 Guidance and Counseling from Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana; and
2 WHEREAS, he was beloved by his family and constituents; and
3 WHEREAS, Amos Cormier Jr. was a lifelong public servant, educator and coach in
4 both football and baseball, having been named as a Louisiana state coach of the year in both
5 sports; and
6 WHEREAS, he taught and coached at Port Sulphur High School, Delta Heritage
7 Academy and at Buras High School where his team won the 1990 AA Louisiana state
8 championship; and
9 WHEREAS, Amos Cormier Jr. was a committed leader in the community; and
10 WHEREAS, he was elected to two terms as parish councilman, serving his
11 hometown of Port Sulphur for eight years before being elected Plaquemines Parish President
12 in 2015; and
13 WHEREAS, he also served as council chairman and recreation director for
14 Plaquemines Parish; and 
15 WHEREAS, Amos Cormier Jr. fulfilled a lifelong dream when he was elected to the
16 position of Plaquemines Parish President, and was a great leader for the residents of that
17 parish; and
18 WHEREAS, Amos Cormier Jr. led Plaquemines Parish with passion and worked
19 tirelessly to meet the needs of residents, while also working effectively with the parish
20 council; and 
21 WHEREAS, as a friend of the region, Amos Cormier Jr. was instrumental in assisting
22 with cooperative regional governmental strategies; and 
23 WHEREAS, Amos Cormier Jr. was a committed and dedicated citizen of Louisiana
24 who worked tirelessly on a multitude of business, civic, political, and religious causes
25 throughout his life; and
26 WHEREAS, because of his numerous accomplishments in public and private life,
27 Amos Cormier Jr. will be forever remembered by the people and friends of Louisiana for his
28 integrity, dignity, courage, and the joy he left in the hearts of all who knew him.
29 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
30 does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Amos Cormier Jr.

1 and extends enduring appreciation for the outstanding service and many accomplishments
2 by him for the good of the people of Plaquemines Parish, the state of Louisiana, and the
3 United States of America.
4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
5 family of Amos Cormier Jr.
