Congratulates the first cohort of Fellows on their completion of the Louisiana Education Policy Fellowship Program coordinated by Orleans Public Education Network as part of the Institute for Educational Leadership. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To commend the first cohort of Fellows on their successful completion of the Louisiana 3 Education Policy Fellowship Program coordinated by Orleans Public Education 4 Network as a part of the Institute for Educational Leadership. 5 WHEREAS, Orleans Public Education Network first convened in late 2007, when 6 several groups including Committee for a Better New Orleans, the Greater New Orleans 7 Education Foundation, Urban League of Greater New Orleans, the Louisiana Justice 8 Institute, and the Children's Defense Fund began to meet with the goal of framing a common 9 theme for public schools; and 10 WHEREAS, Navigating New Orleans' storied racial divide and always engaging 11 transparency in the process, the groups determined in conjunction that an engaged and 12 informed public was the most effective path to building student success and equity in a 13 historically-troubled landscape; and 14 WHEREAS, the New Orleans Public Education Network (OPEN) members 15 determined that the central aim of the work would be creating civic capacity in public 16 education; and 17 WHEREAS, OPEN created the Education Policy Fellowship Program (EPFP) which 18 prepares high potential professionals for leadership positions in education and related policy Page 1 of 3 SR NO. 32 SLS 162ES-102 ORIGINAL 1 fields; and 2 WHEREAS, EPFP is Louisiana's only professional development program for 3 emerging leaders seeking to improve outcomes for children and youth through sound public 4 policy, and in 2015, Louisiana joined the ranks of fourteen other states across the United 5 States in welcoming EPFP to our community; and 6 WHEREAS, the program allows the Fellows to remain in their full-time positions 7 and use their work environment as the context for examining important leadership and policy 8 issues in their state and in the nation; and 9 WHEREAS, through EPFP's Continuing Education Units, states develop an extensive 10 network of professionals capable of sustaining and acting on a coherent policy dialogue 11 around significant issues in education; and 12 WHEREAS, organizations build the human capital and professional networks to 13 enable them to compete effectively in a strategic environment, and individuals develop their 14 leadership potential, knowledge of the policy process, and ability to add value to their 15 organizations at a strategic level; and 16 WHEREAS, since its inception in 1964, EPFP has produced nearly eight thousand 17 alumni who now lead at high levels in all sectors of American life, within and outside 18 education; and 19 WHEREAS, the inaugural class of Fellows coordinated by Orleans Public Education 20 Network has successfully graduated; and 21 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend and congratulate Brian Adams with Teach 22 For America South Louisiana, Marsha Broussard with Louisiana Public Health Institute, 23 Sherdren Burnside with Journey Ninth Ward Assembly of God, Lisa French with Louisiana 24 Department of Education, Dr. Lisa Green-Derry with Urban Strategies, Inc., Susan Kahn 25 with University of Louisiana Lafayette, Sara Massey with Communities in Schools New 26 Orleans, Zakenya Perry Neely with Orleans Public Education Network, and Brionne Stewart 27 with Young Audiences Charter School on being chosen to participate in the Education Policy 28 Fellowship Program inaugural class and for successfully completing the fellowship. 29 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 30 does hereby congratulate the first cohort of Fellows and wish them much luck in their Page 2 of 3 SR NO. 32 SLS 162ES-102 ORIGINAL 1 educational leadership endeavors across our great state. 2 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Julia 3 Ramsey, Communications Coordinator at Orleans Public Education Network.
