HB 343 Original	2016 Regular Session	Jones
Abstract:  Provides relative to the composition of the St. Mary School Board and for the election
and election districts of its members.
Present law (R.S. 17:52) provides for parish school board members to be elected at the congressional
elections. Proposed law provides, that notwithstanding present law, members of the St. Mary Parish
School Board shall be elected at the gubernatorial elections; the school board shall have the same
number of members as the St. Mary Parish Council; school board members shall be elected from the
parish council election districts; and, to facilitate moving this school board's election from the
congressional to the gubernatorial elections, school board members elected in 2014 shall serve
five-year terms.
Effective, in part, if and when the proposed amendment of Article VIII of the Constitution of La.
contained in the Act which originated as House Bill No. ___ of this 2016 R.S. of the Legislature is
adopted at a statewide election and becomes effective. Effective, in part, on January 1, 2020.
