HOUSE BILL NO. 355

MTR VEHICLE/LICEN PLATES:  Provides relative to military honor license plates for
"Bronze Star Medal" recipients
1	AN ACT
2To enact R.S. 47:490.30, relative to military honor license plates; to provide for the
3 establishment of a military honor license plate for the recipients of the Bronze Star
4 Medal; to require the promulgation of rules and regulations relative to the creation
5 and implementation of a military honor license plate; and to provide for related
6 matters.
7Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
8 Section 1.  R.S. 47:490.30 is hereby enacted to read as follows:
9 ยง490.30.  Military honor license plates; "Bronze Star Medal"
10	A.  The provisions of this Section shall be applicable to Bronze Star Medal
11 recipients.
12	B.  Upon application of a Bronze Star Medal recipient, the secretary of the
13 Department of Public Safety and Corrections shall issue a military honor license
14 plate to be used in lieu of a regular motor vehicle license registration plate.  The
15 license plates shall be restricted to use on passenger cars, pickup trucks, recreational
16 vehicles, motorcycles, and vans.  The military honor license plate shall be known as
17 the "Bronze Star Medal" license plate and shall bear a likeness of the Bronze Star
18 Medal centered on the left side of the license plate and the words "Bronze Star
19 Medal" centered on the bottom of the plate under the license plate number.

1	C.  The fee for this license plate shall be the standard motor vehicle
2 registration license fee provided for in R.S. 47:463.
3	D.  The secretary shall adopt rules and regulations to implement the
4 provisions of this Section, including but not limited to rules governing the transfer
5 of the license plates from one vehicle to another and the disposition of such license
6 plates.
7	E.(1)  Any applicant who qualifies for the military honor license plate
8 authorized by this Section may be issued a plate for each vehicle registered in the
9 applicant's name.
10	(2)  Except as otherwise provided in this Paragraph, each military honor
11 license plate issued pursuant to this Section shall be returned to the secretary upon
12 the death of the person to whom the plate was issued.  A surviving spouse of a
13 person to whom a license plate was issued pursuant to this Section may retain a
14 license plate issued pursuant to this Section, provided the surviving spouse has not
15 remarried and provided the surviving spouse applies to the secretary for a transfer
16 of the license plate to the surviving spouse.  A military honor license plate
17 transferred to a surviving spouse pursuant to this Paragraph shall be returned to the
18 secretary upon the death or remarriage of the surviving spouse.  In the event that a
19 Bronze Star Medal recipient holds more than one military honor license plate at the
20 time the Bronze Star Medal recipient dies, the surviving spouse may determine
21 which of the license plates the surviving spouse wishes to retain.

Proposed law requires the secretary of the Dept. of Public Safety and Corrections to develop
and adopt rules relative to the implementation of the speciality plate including the transfer
of the license plate to the surviving spouse and the disposition of the speciality plate.
