HLS 16RS-946 ORIGINAL 2016 Regular Session HOUSE BILL NO. 591 BY REPRESENTATIVE TERRY LANDRY TRANSPORTATION: Permits vehicles operated by engines fueled wholly or partially with compressed or liquefied natural gas to exceed gross vehicle weight limits and axle weight limits 1 AN ACT 2To enact R.S. 32:386(L), relative to the weight of certain vehicles allowed on roads and 3 highways; to permit certain vehicles to exceed weight limitations on roads and 4 highways; and to provide for related matters. 5Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana: 6 Section 1. R.S. 32:386(L) is hereby enacted to read as follows: 7 ยง386. Weight 8 * * * 9 L.(1) Notwithstanding any provision of law to the contrary, a vehicle, if 10 operated by an engine fueled wholly or partially by compressed or liquified natural 11 gas, may exceed the gross vehicle weight limits and any axle weight limits imposed 12 by this Subpart by an amount, not to exceed a maximum of two thousand pounds, 13 that is equal to the difference between the weight of the vehicle attributable to the 14 natural gas tank and fueling system carried by that vehicle and the weight of a 15 comparable diesel tank and fueling system. 16 (2) The weight exception provided in this Subsection shall apply to all state 17 roads and interstate highways per the exemption expressly permitted by 23 USC 127, 18 as amended by Section 1410 of the Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act of 19 2015. Present law provides that the total gross weight of any vehicle or combination of vehicles shall not exceed a certain amount. Proposed law provides an exception to present law that allows for a vehicle, if operated by an engine fueled wholly or partially by compressed or liquified natural gas, to exceed this limitation by up to 2000 lbs. Proposed law specifies that the weight exception provided in proposed law applies to all state roads and interstate highways per the exemption expressly permitted by federal law.
