MTR VEHICLE/TRUCKS: Authorizes night movement of permitted vehicles on interstate
highways
1 AN ACT
2To amend and reenact R.S. 32:387(A), relative to special permits for travel on the state's
3 highways; to authorize vehicles issued special permits by the Department of
4 Transportation and Development to operate on interstate highways at night under
5 certain circumstances; and to provide for related matters.
6Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
7 Section 1. R.S. 32:387(A) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:
8 ยง387. Special permits
9 A. No vehicle or combination of vehicles which that does not meet the
10 requirements of R.S. 32:380 through R.S. 32:386 shall use the public highways of
11 this state without first obtaining a special permit from the department in addition to
12 any other special permit which may be required from any other agency or department
13 of the state or a political subdivision, and the special permit herein provided for shall
14 be issued at the discretion of the secretary. If a permit issued pursuant to Subsection
15 B of this Section authorizes a vehicle to operate on interstate highways, the secretary
16 may allow the vehicle to operate on interstate highways at night if requested by the
17 owner or operator.

Abstract: Authorizes vehicles issued certain special permits by the Dept. of Transportation
and Development to operate on interstate highways at night under certain
circumstances.
Present law provides that vehicles that do not meet the standard measurements for regular
operation of vehicles on highways may be allowed to operate such vehicles on highways if
issued a special permit to do so by the secretary of the Dept. of Transportation and
Development.
Proposed law retains present law.
Proposed law authorizes the secretary of the Dept. of Transportation and Development to
allow vehicles issued certain special permits to operate on interstate highways at night if
requested by the owner or operator of the vehicle.
