HOUSE BILL NO. 964

SCHOOLS/EMPLOYEES:  Provides relative to the treatment and care of students with
diabetes
1	AN ACT
2To amend and reenact R.S. 17:436.3(C)(1), relative to care for elementary and secondary
3 school students with diabetes; to provide relative to persons authorized to provide
4 such care; and to provide for related matters.
5Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1.  R.S. 17:436.3(C)(1) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:
7 ยง436.3.  Students with diabetes; management and treatment plans; provision of care;
8	unlicensed diabetes care assistants; student self-monitoring and treatment

10	C.(1)  For purposes of this Section, "unlicensed diabetes care assistant"
11 means a school employee who volunteers to be trained in accordance with this
12 Section.  "Unlicensed diabetes care assistant" also means an employee of an entity
13 that contracts with the school or school system to provide school nurses who are
14 responsible for providing health care services required by law or Department of
15 Education regulation.

Abstract:  Provides relative to unlicensed persons authorized to assist in caring for students
with diabetes.
Present law provides for the care of students with diabetes enrolled in public and nonpublic
elementary and secondary schools.  Requires that a diabetes management and treatment plan
be submitted by each student with diabetes who seeks care for his diabetes while at school
or while participating in a school-related activity.  Provides that the school nurse or an
unlicensed diabetes care assistant shall provide care to a student with diabetes or assist a
student with the self-care of his diabetes.   Proposed law retains present law.
Present law defines unlicensed diabetes care assistant as a school employee who volunteers
to be trained in accordance with present law.  Proposed law provides that the term also
means an employee of an entity that contracts with the school or school system to provide
school nurses.
