HB 989 Original	2016 Regular Session	Shadoin
Abstract: Removes a requirement that out-of-state tuition and fees at public colleges and
universities be at least equal to amounts charged at peer institutions in the Southern Regional
Education Bd. (SREB).
Present law authorizes the management boards of the public postsecondary education systems to
establish tuition and mandatory attendance fee amounts applicable to nonresident students at their
respective institutions. Proposed law retains present law.
Present law requires that tuition and fee amounts for nonresident students be at least equal to the
average amount of annual tuition and mandatory attendance fees for nonresident students at peer
institutions in states comprising the SREB, excluding La. Present law provides an exception to this
requirement for historically black colleges and universities. Proposed law removes the requirement
and the exception.
