Abstract:  Requires sheriffs and deputy sheriffs who retire on or after July 1, 2016, from the
Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office to have either 20, 25, or 30 years of full-time creditable
service with the Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office in order to have a certain percentage of
the premiums for health and life insurance benefits paid from the sheriff's general fund.
Present law provides that 100% of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, medical expense,
and dental insurance and the first $10,000 of life insurance shall be paid out of the sheriffs general
fund for all sheriffs and deputy sheriffs who retire on or after July 1, 2001, and before July 1, 2011,
from the Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office with at least 20 years of service and 55 years of age.
Present law provides that the Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office shall continue to pay 100% of
insurance premiums and pay the same percentage of premiums for the same type and level of
insurance coverage for  all sheriff and deputy sheriff dependents that were covered under the
provision of law that existed prior to June 1, 2001.
Present law provides that 100% of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, medical expense,
and dental insurance and the first $10,000 of life insurance shall be paid out of the sheriffs general
fund for all sheriffs and deputy sheriffs who retire on or after July 1, 2011, from the Assumption
Parish Sheriff's Office with at least 20 years of service and 55 years of age.
Proposed law retains present law and further provides that in the parish of Assumption, present law
only applies to sheriffs and deputy sheriffs retired before July 1, 2016.
Proposed law requires that the Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office pay these premium insurance costs
out of the sheriffs general fund for all sheriffs and deputy sheriffs who retire from the Assumption
Parish Sheriff's Office on or after July 1, 2016, as follows:
(1)100% of the premium costs with at least 30 years of full-time creditable service with the
Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office and are 55 years of age on the date of formal retirement.
(2)75% of the premium costs with at least 25 years of full-time creditable service with the
Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office and are 55 years of age on the date of formal retirement.
(3)50% of the premium costs with at least 20 years of full-time creditable service with the
Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office and are 55 years of age on the date of formal retirement. Effective July 1, 2016.
