HLS 16RS-112 ORIGINAL 2016 Regular Session HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 125 BY REPRESENTATIVE SMITH SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Designates Tuesday, May 17, 2016, as AKA Day at the state capitol 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2To designate Tuesday, May 17, 2016, as AKA Day at the state capitol and to commend the 3 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. 4 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha 5Sorority, Incorporated, for one hundred eight years of exemplary leadership and outstanding 6community service, and to designate Tuesday, May 17, 2016, as AKA Day at the state 7capitol; and 8 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, which has the distinction 9of being the first sorority established by African American college women, was founded at 10Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908; and 11 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's unending quest to be "Supreme in 12Service to All Mankind" spans across domestic and international boundaries through the 13service of members of more than nine hundred eighty-three chapters around the world; and 14 WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana hosts thirty-six of these chapters located on 15college and university campuses and active alumnae groups in communities throughout the 16state; and 17 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, is a union of over two 18hundred eighty-three thousand energetic, ambitious, and dedicated college-trained women 19who have consciously chosen this affiliation as a means of service to promote community 20initiatives in health preservation, preventive health education, academic excellence, and 21economic empowerment; and Page 1 of 3 HLS 16RS-112 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 125 1 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority chapters encourage members to become 2involved and committed community volunteers in five primary service target areas that 3actively contribute to the educational, civic, and social lives of the citizens of Louisiana; and 4 WHEREAS, the five primary service target areas include educational enrichment, 5health promotion, family strengthening, environmental ownership, and global impact, and 6such target areas expand into the 2014-2018 International Program theme of, "Launching 7New Dimensions of Service", where members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will continue 8to implement service projects globally; and 9 WHEREAS, whether making and sending dresses to little girls in Liberia, providing 10school supplies for children of incarcerated parents, purchasing livestock to support women 11farmers in Kenya and Ecuador, rebuilding homes in the Gulf Region of the United States, 12providing scholastic and beautification projects to historically black colleges, or developing 13emerging young leaders through mentoring programs throughout the nation, the women of 14Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, are committed to making a positive impact upon 15campuses, communities, our nation, and the world; and 16 WHEREAS, AKA Day at the state capitol is a national program through which 17Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority members throughout the nation meet with their legislators to 18address issues that are pertinent to their communities. 19 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 20recognize Tuesday, May 17, 2016, as AKA Day at the Louisiana State Capitol and does 21hereby commend and express enduring appreciation to the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha 22Sorority, Incorporated, for their exemplary leadership and outstanding community service, 23and for the tremendous honor and pride these women bring to their families, friends, 24communities, the state of Louisiana, our nation, and to communities across the globe. 25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted 26to Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, the international president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, 27Incorporated.
