A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Rita Doughty Thompson.
WHEREAS, it was with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the
Legislature of Louisiana learned of the death of Rita Doughty Thompson on Thursday, April
14, 2016; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Thompson was born on October 19, 1931, in Jena, to Luther Ray
Doughty, Sr., and Gertrude Summerlin Doughty; and
WHEREAS, she volunteered her time to improve the lives of many citizens; for
twenty-three years, Mrs. Thompson volunteered worldwide in a variety of organizations
while her husband served honorably in the United States Air Force; and
WHEREAS, she was a faithful member of Cypress Baptist Church and was
employed as an executive secretary for the Louisiana Jaycees for many years; and
WHEREAS, she was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Kathryn
Breithaupt; and her brother, Luther Ray Doughty, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Thompson leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband of
sixty-three years, Colonel Ray G. Thompson, United States Air Force, Retired; her sons, Ray
G. Thompson, Jr., and his wife Jenna and the Honorable Jeff  R. Thompson, Jr., and his wife
Toni; her daughter, Starla Lawrence and her husband Dr. Scott Lawrence; her grandchildren,
Alicia Finley, Heather Looney, Hannah Hofweber, Madi Lawrence, R. Chase Thompson,
Lillie Thompson, and Rowe Thompson; and her five great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, with the death of Rita Doughty Thompson, Louisiana has lost one her
finest citizens, and her death has left a great void and created a genuine sense of sorrow in
all who knew her, including her family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Rita Doughty Thompson leaves behind a rich and unique legacy of hard
work and dedication and is greatly missed by all whose lives she touched.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Rita Doughty Thompson; does
hereby recognize and record for posterity her notable accomplishments and singular
contributions; and does hereby extend enduring appreciation for the pride and honor that she
will forever bring to her family and friends, her community, and the state of Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the family of Rita Doughty Thompson.
