SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Designates Tuesday, May 3, 2016, as Louisiana
Chemical Industry Day
1	A RESOLUTION
2To designate Tuesday, May 3, 2016, as Louisiana Chemical Industry Day at the state capitol.
3 WHEREAS, nature endowed Louisiana with gifts that provided the springboard for
4major industry which has brought great benefits to the people of the state; and
5 WHEREAS, these gifts include abundant oil and natural gas, salt dome caverns,
6sulfur deposits, fresh water, and access to the oceans of the world through the Calcaseiu
7Basin and Mississippi River; and
8 WHEREAS, the petrochemical industry that has grown up around these natural
9amenities has become one of Louisiana's greatest assets; and
10 WHEREAS, the Louisiana chemical industry acknowledges that it depends upon
11Louisiana and its residents for its resources, a well-trained workforce, and a strong business
12climate; and
13 WHEREAS, this industry provides the most direct jobs in Louisiana's manufacturing
14sector, employing nearly twenty-seven thousand Louisiana citizens in fifty-three of the
15state's sixty-four parishes, and tens of thousands more employees in hundreds of businesses
16that support the industry; and
17 WHEREAS, an additional one hundred forty thousand jobs are generated indirectly
18by chemical industry activity in Louisiana; and
19 WHEREAS, the Louisiana chemical industry produces nearly fifty-eight billion
20dollars in products annually, the third highest total in the nation; and

1 WHEREAS, Louisiana exports over eight billion dollars in chemical products
2annually to other parts of the world; and
3 WHEREAS, chemical industry wages in Louisiana are forty-seven percent higher
4than the average manufacturing wages in Louisiana; and
5 WHEREAS, the industry contributes more than one billion and one-half dollars
6annually to state and local coffers through direct tax payments and through household
7earnings generated by the Louisiana chemical industry; and
8 WHEREAS, almost nine billion dollars of total direct employee earnings are
9generated by chemical companies; and
10 WHEREAS, Louisianians' lives are enhanced and improved every day by chemical
11products produced in Louisiana, ranging from fire-resistant foam used in bedding and the
12chairs on which we sit, to the nitrogen in bags that give potato chips a longer shelf-life, to
13golf clubs, to hard hats, to bulletproof vests, to contact lenses, to pacemakers, and thousands
14more consumer products; and
15 WHEREAS, the Louisiana chemical industry is more than just a group of companies
16and is comprised of a collection of people who want the same things their neighbors want:
17safe and clean communities with vibrant neighborhoods, good schools, and a strong
18economy; and
19 WHEREAS, the Louisiana chemical industry is essential to the state's economic
20growth and to its economic development.
21 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
22Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize the essential role the chemical industry plays
23in Louisiana's economic development and does hereby designate Tuesday, May 3, 2016, as
24Louisiana Chemical Industry Day at the state capitol.
25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
26to the Louisiana Chemical Association.
