BY REPRESENTATIVE LEGER
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Recognizes Sunday, May 8, 2016, as Child Care
Provider Appreciation Day in the state of Louisiana
1	A RESOLUTION
2To recognize Sunday, May 8, 2016, as Child Care Provider Appreciation Day in the state of
3 Louisiana.
4 WHEREAS, the second Sunday in May has long been recognized as the day to honor
5mothers and their commitment to children; and
6 WHEREAS, May 6, 2016, the Friday before Mother's Day, has been nationally
7designated as Child Care Provider Appreciation Day, a day set aside to recognize child care
8providers, teachers, school-age program staff, child care center directors and staff, and all
9those who work with children and are responsible for their education and care; and 
10 WHEREAS, it is estimated that nearly eleven million children under age five are
11cared for by 2.8 million child care providers in the United States; and
12 WHEREAS, Child Care Provider Appreciation Day began in 1996 when a group of
13volunteers in New Jersey saw the need to recognize the tireless efforts of providers who care
14for the children of working parents; and
15 WHEREAS, momentum and support for this event has grown each year, and
16individuals and government organizations throughout North America, Europe, and Asia are
17recognized for the dedication and care provided to children; and
18 WHEREAS, of the twenty million children under age five in America, nearly eleven
19million are in some form of childcare setting; and

1 WHEREAS, the Child Care Association of Louisiana, a statewide, nonprofit
2organization, represents the interests of licensed childcare providers and children they serve,
3and wholeheartedly endorses and promotes Child Care Provider Appreciation Day; and
4 WHEREAS, the mission of the Child Care Association of Louisiana is to educate,
5advocate, and collaborate to build a premier, proactive childcare industry for Louisiana
6families; and
7 WHEREAS, by calling attention to the importance of high quality child care services
8for all children and families within the state, the Child Care Association of Louisiana and
9other advocacy organizations hope to improve the quality and availability of such services;
10and
11 WHEREAS, our future depends on the quality of the early childhood experiences
12provided today to our children; high quality early childcare services represent a worthy
13commitment to their futures; and
14 WHEREAS, in the words of Jonathan Pearce, president of the Child Care
15Association of Louisiana: "Every child should have access to a high quality early childhood
16educational program and be prepared to enter kindergarten ready to learn."
17 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
18Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Sunday, May 8, 2016, as Child Care
19Provider Appreciation Day in the state of Louisiana and does hereby urge all citizens to
20recognize licensed childcare providers for their important work.
21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that suitable copies of this Resolution be transmitted
22to Jonathan Pearce, president of the Child Care Association of Louisiana and Cindy Bishop,
23executive director of the Child Care Association of Louisiana.
