HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 130
BY REPRESENTATIVE LEGER
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Designates May as Foster Care Month in Louisiana
1	A RESOLUTION
2To designate the month of May as Foster Care Month in Louisiana.
3 WHEREAS, every child deserves the safety, love and well-being of a permanent
4family and home; and
5 WHEREAS, the family, serving as the primary source of love, identity, self-esteem,
6and support, is the very foundation of our communities; and
7 WHEREAS, in Louisiana, more than eight thousand children and youth are served
8annually in foster care and are provided with safe, secure, and stable homes, and the
9compassion and love of foster families; and
10 WHEREAS, all young people in foster care need a meaningful connection to a caring
11adult who provides a supportive and lasting presence in their lives; and
12 WHEREAS, foster, kinship, and adoptive families play a vital role in helping
13children and families heal and reconnect, thereby launching young people into successful 
14adulthood; and
15 WHEREAS, dedicated foster families frequently adopt foster children, resulting in
16a need for more foster families; and
17 WHEREAS, volunteers, professionals, community, and faith based organizations are
18working to increase public awareness of the needs of children in or leaving foster care, and
19the enduring and valuable contributions of foster parents is worthy of recognition; and

1 WHEREAS, the Foster Care & Adoption Caucus has been created in the Legislature
2of Louisiana to bring adoption and foster care issues to the forefront of consciousness for
3legislators and policy makers.
4 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
5Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate the month of May as Foster Care Month in
6Louisiana.
7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that suitable copies of this Resolution be transmitted
8to Kim Carver of the Louisiana Institute of Children in Families, Judge Madeleine Landrieu,
9and the secretary of the Department of Children and Family Services.
