HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 142

A RESOLUTION
To commend Les "Pe-Te" Johnson (Jeansonne) for thirty years of broadcasting as the Cajun
Voice in Houston.
WHEREAS, Eunice, Louisiana, native Les "Pe-Te" Johnson has made his home in
neighboring Texas for more than three decades but has spread Cajun traditions in cuisine and
culture in the Lone Star State; and
WHEREAS, Pe-Te completed four years of service in the U.S. Air Force after his
1958 graduation from Eunice High School; he moved to Texas and opened Pe-Te's Cajun
BBQ House in 1979, which he owned and operated until 2002; and
WHEREAS, the Cajun culture took root in Texas with Saturday afternoon and
evening dances at Pe-Te's BBQ House, and NASA employees were drawn to the
establishment by the good food and good times provided by Pe-Te and his staff; Pe-Te's
galaxy-famous barbecue and beans and rice have made it into space by means of the space
shuttle, and Pe-Te's cassette tapes and CDs of Cajun music have been played in the space
shuttle and on the space station; and
WHEREAS, Pe-Te's Cajun Radio Show was on air on KTEK in Houston from 1981
to 1983; Pe-Te took his unique musical stylings to KPFT, Houston's nonprofit public radio
station, where he has volunteered as a disc jockey since 1983 playing The Cajun Bandstand
radio show three days a week; he has earned the moniker, the Cajun Voice in Houston; and
WHEREAS, eleven gumbo cook-offs and four golf tournaments hosted by Pe-Te
have contributed operational support for KPFT and keep the Cajun culture alive in Houston;
and
WHEREAS, the Cajun French Music Association Museum in Eunice houses cassette
tapes and CDs that made the trip to space and back, and they are proudly displayed with their
NASA documentation; and

WHEREAS, Pe-Te is a member of the Cajun French Music Association and has
hosted visits by astronauts to the Cajun French Music Association museum and its Fourth
of July parade; he has seen thirteen space shuttle lift-offs from Cape Canaveral; and
WHEREAS, Pe-Te has spent forty-eight wonderful years with his wife, Jennie
Johnson; he proudly travels between Friendswood, Texas, and his hometown, Eunice,
spreading Cajun good cheer far and wide.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Les "Pe-Te" Johnson for thirty years of
broadcasting as the Cajun Voice in Houston and for being a Cajun ambassador to the Lone
Star State.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Les "Pe-Te" Johnson (Jeansonne).
