HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 180
BY REPRESENTATIVE JACKSON
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Designates Thursday, May 26, 2016, as Girl Scouts of
the USA Day at the state capitol
1	A RESOLUTION
2To designate Thursday, May 26, 2016, as Girl Scouts of the United States of America Day
3 at the state capitol and to recognize the one hundred fourth anniversary of the
4 founding of Girl Scouting.
5 WHEREAS, Girl Scouts of the United States of America is the world's largest and
6most preeminent organization dedicated solely to all girls everywhere and to helping girls
7build character and gain skills for success in the real world; and
8 WHEREAS, 2016 marks the centennial of the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest
9award in Girl Scouting; the award represents excellence and leadership for girls worldwide;
10girls who pursue the award aspire to transform an idea and vision for change into an
11actionable plan with far reaching results; and
12 WHEREAS, the young women in Louisiana who have earned the 2016 Girl Scout
13Gold Award and will advance to become community leaders are Kelsey Anderson from
14Leesville, Maya Shelby from Ball, Sarah Wright from Crowley, Abbie McMillon from
15Mooringsport, Miranda Weddleton from Mooringsport, Gabrielle Chapman from Ville
16Platte, Victoria Murphy from Franklinton, Sarah Taylor from Bush, Brianna Anderson from
17Norco, and Allison Smith from Geismar; and
18 WHEREAS, in 2015-2016, the Girls Scouts of Louisiana–Pines to the Gulf and Girls
19Scouts Louisiana East served more than twenty-two thousand girls in six program levels; and
20 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize and commend the Girl Scouts of
21Louisiana–Pines to the Gulf and Girl Scouts of Louisiana East for serving girls in Louisiana

1through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, which helps girls develop a solid foundation
2in leadership through core programs around science, technology, engineering, math,
3environmental stewardship, healthy living, financial literacy, and global citizenship; and
4 WHEREAS, throughout its distinguished history, Girl Scouting has welcomed girls
5and women from every background as members and has instilled them with courage,
6confidence, and character to make the world a better place; and
7 WHEREAS, the Girl Scout program is based on leadership development, discovering
8a strong sense of self and positive values, connecting with others to build healthy
9relationships and advance diversity in a multicultural world, and taking action to meet
10community needs; and
11 WHEREAS, during the past one hundred four years, over fifty-five million American
12women have participated in Girl Scouting, and this enduring tradition continues to
13strengthen individual communities and our society as a whole.
14 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
15Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate Thursday, May 26, 2016, as Girl Scouts of
16the United States of America Day at the state capital and recognize the one hundred fourth
17anniversary of the founding of Girl Scouting; does hereby commend the organization for its
18many contributions and continued dedication to girls in the United States of America and
19around the world; and does hereby welcome members of the Girl Scouts of the United States
20of America as they visit the capitol on this special and memorable occasion.
21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
22to the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, to Girl Scouts of Louisiana–Pines to the
23Gulf, and to Girl Scouts of Louisiana East.
