HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 229

COMMENDATIONS:  Commends Ralph Garr for his legendary baseball career with the
Atlanta Braves and upon his selection as the guest of honor at the Grambling State
University National Alumni Association Scholarship Gala
1	A RESOLUTION
2To commend Ralph Garr for his legendary baseball career with the Atlanta Braves and upon
3 his selection as the guest of honor at the Grambling State University National
4 Alumni Association Scholarship Gala.
5 WHEREAS, Ralph Garr grew up in Ruston, Louisiana; he graduated from Lincoln
6High School in 1963 and attended Grambling State University, where he was a standout
7athlete; and
8 WHEREAS, Mr. Garr played baseball for Grambling State University from 1964
9until 1967; for three years at Grambling State University, he was the baseball team's leading
10hitter each year, and he led the country in hitting with a .582 batting average; and
11 WHEREAS, in 1967, he appeared in the "Faces in the Crowd" section of Sports
12Illustrated; and
13 WHEREAS, Mr. Garr was selected as a first team National Association of
14Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) All American in 1967, and he was selected by the Atlanta
15Braves in the third round of the Major League Baseball draft; and
16 WHEREAS, for thirteen years, he played in the major leagues as an outfielder; he
17also played for the Chicago White Sox and the California Angels; and
18 WHEREAS, he was known as the "Road Runner" and won a National League batting
19title in 1974 with a .353 batting average; he has a lifetime batting average of .306; and

1 WHEREAS, he is a member of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, the Grambling
2State University Alumni Hall of Fame, the Atlanta Braves Hall of Fame, and the National
3College Baseball Hall of Fame; in 2008, he was elected to the International League Hall of
4Fame; and
5 WHEREAS, in 2009, he was nominated for membership into the College Baseball
6Foundation's Hall of Fame, and on July 18, 2009, he was inducted into the Grambling
7Legends Sports Hall of Fame; and
8 WHEREAS, he has worked as a professional baseball scout for the Atlanta Braves
9since 1985; and
10 WHEREAS, Ralph Garr, one of Louisiana's finest sons, merits a special measure of
11commendation for his legendary baseball career with the Atlanta Braves and upon his
12selection as the guest of honor at the Grambling State University National Alumni
13Association Scholarship Gala.
14 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
15Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Ralph Garr for his legendary baseball career
16with the Atlanta Braves and upon his selection as the guest of honor at the Grambling State
17University National Alumni Association Scholarship Gala and does hereby extend enduring
18appreciation for the tremendous pride and honor that he brings to his family and friends, his
19community, Grambling State University, and the state of Louisiana.
20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
21to Ralph Garr.
