HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 234

A RESOLUTION
To commend the Woodlawn Lion Dance Team upon its induction into the 2016 Louisiana
Folklife Center Hall of Master Folk Artists.
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Folklife Center is an agency of Northwestern State
University of Louisiana and was established in 1976; and
WHEREAS, the Folklife Center serves as an archival repository for many folklife
materials; and
WHEREAS, the Woodlawn Lion Dance Team has been inducted into the 2016
Louisiana Folklife Center Hall of Master Folk Artists, and although the team has been
known as a Dragon Dance group, the character depicted by the dancers is a lion; and
WHEREAS, all of the dancers in the Woodlawn Lion Dance Team belong to the
Vietnamese Community Church in Marrero; the team's leaders are former dancers, and they
use their experience to train new members; and
WHEREAS, the Woodlawn Lion Dance Team bases its movements on traditional
Vietnamese dances with the incorporation of new steps; this artistic expression has become
a historical and cultural heritage for the growing Vietnamese community in Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, the Woodlawn Lion Dance Team merits a special measure of
commendation upon its induction into the 2016 Louisiana Folklife Center Hall of Master
Folk Artists.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Woodlawn Lion Dance Team upon its
induction into the 2016 Louisiana Folklife Center Hall of Master Folk Artists and does
hereby extend to the team members every good wish for continued success, prosperity, and
happiness in the future.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the Woodlawn Lion Dance Team.
