ENROLLED 2016 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 238 BY REPRESENTATIVES BOUIE AND GLOVER A RESOLUTION To express the condolences of the House of Representatives upon the death of former heavyweight boxing champion, Muhammad Ali. WHEREAS, it was with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the Louisiana House of Representatives learned of the death of Muhammad Ali, a legendary boxing champion, on Friday, June 3, 2016, at the age of seventy-four; and WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali was nicknamed "The Greatest"; he rose to fame in 1960 after winning the light-heavyweight gold at the Rome Olympics; and WHEREAS, he quickly rose through the heavyweight ranks; he delighted crowds with his showboating, shuffling feet, and lightning reflexes; and WHEREAS, in 1964, he beat Sonny Liston to win his first world title, and he became the first boxer to capture a world heavyweight title on three separate occasions; and WHEREAS, in 1981, he retired after winning fifty-six out of sixty-one fights; and WHEREAS, he was a civil rights advocate and a poet who transcended the bounds of sport, race, and nationality; and WHEREAS, former United States President Bill Clinton described Muhammad Ali as "courageous in the ring, inspiring to the young, compassionate to those in need, and strong and good humored in bearing the burden of his own health challenges"; and WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali stated he wanted to be known "as a man who never sold out his people. But if that's too much, then just a good boxer"; and WHEREAS, throughout his notable career, Muhammad Ali earned the abiding admiration and respect of his fellow Americans and citizens in countries throughout the world; and WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali's life was a gift to the world, and it is wholly appropriate to express condolences upon his death. Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 238 ENROLLED THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express condolences upon the death of former heavyweight boxing champion, Muhammad Ali; does hereby recognize his life as a treasure to the United States and the world; and does hereby record for posterity his legendary contributions as a champion boxer.
