HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 47
BY REPRESENTATIVE HUNTER
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Recognizes Wednesday, April 6, 2016, as the thirty-
second Annual Red and White Day at the Louisiana Legislature
1	A RESOLUTION
2To recognize Wednesday, April 6, 2016 as the thirty-second Annual Red and White Day at
3 the Louisiana Legislature.
4 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated
5on one hundred three years of service and outstanding achievements in the community, the
6state, and the world; and
7 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Social Action Committee of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
8Incorporated would like to acknowledge the vision of Red and White Day at the Louisiana
9Legislature that began in 1985 has resulted in Red and White Day growing from a Louisiana
10tradition to one observed by many of the sororities and fraternities, more than one thousand
11chapters throughout the country, and held annually at the Nation's Capital in Washington,
12D.C.; and
13 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913, by
14twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University who were eager to use their collective
15strength to promote academic excellence; and
16 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority organized to provide scholarships and
17support to those in need, to educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of
18positive public policy, to highlight issues, and find solutions to problems in their
19communities; and

1 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority celebrates one hundred and three years of
2exercising its collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance
3to the community; and
4 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was incorporated in 1930 and is a private,
5nonprofit organization that provides assistance and support through established programs
6in local communities and throughout the world; and
7 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is the largest African-American Greek letter
8sorority, a sisterhood of more than two hundred thousand predominately African-American
9college educated women; and
10 WHEREAS, it is comprised of over nine hundred chapters located in the United
11States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Haiti,
12the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea; and
13 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority uses its Five-Point Program Thrust of
14Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and
15Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement to
16uplift, encourage, and develop the global community; and
17 WHEREAS, the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority stand on the shoulders of
18giants, such as Senator Diana E. Bajoie, Representative Renee Gill Pratt, Representative
19Pinkie Carolyn Wilkerson, Representative Rosalind Peychaud, Representative Jalila
20Jefferson Bullock, Senator Cheryl Gray Evans, and Senator Karen Carter Peterson who have
21left an incredible imprint on this state's history; and
22 WHEREAS, on this Red and White Day, the sorority honors and celebrates eight of
23its members who are making major impact on the state in true Delta fashion and have proven
24themselves as notable leaders in Louisiana government; these ladies are: Deputy
25Undersecretary Kim Hunter-Reed, Senator Karen Carter Peterson, Secretary Kimberly
26Robinson, Assistant Secretary Mandi Mitchell, Deputy Undersecretary Etta Harris, First
27Assistant Secretary Yolanda Dixon, Special Counsel Erin Monroe Wesley, and Maxine
28Cormier; and

1 WHEREAS, the sorority will be joined by Governor Edwards who will serve as the
2keynote Red and White Day speaker and will assist the members in congratulating these
3eight outstanding women. 
4 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
5Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Wednesday, April 6, 2016, as Delta Sigma
6Theta Sorority, Incorporated's Red and White Day at the Louisiana Legislature, does hereby
7commend the women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated for their exceptional
8achievements and manyfold contributions, and does hereby extend enduring appreciation to
9the organization and its members for the tremendous honor and pride that they bring to their
10local communities, the state of Louisiana, and the United States of America.
11 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
12to the president of the Grand Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and to
13the regional director for the Southwest Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
