BY REPRESENTATIVES CARPENTER, HALL, AND JENKINS
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Recognizes Tuesday, May 10, 2016, as Zeta Phi Beta
Day at the state capitol
1	A RESOLUTION
2To recognize Tuesday, May 10, 2016, as Zeta Phi Beta Day at the state capitol and to
3 commend the members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.
4 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend the members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,
5Incorporated, for their outstanding community service and to recognize Tuesday, May 10,
62016, as Zeta Day at the state capitol; and
7 WHEREAS, founded at Howard University in Washington D.C., in 1920, Zeta Phi
8Beta Sorority has the distinction of being the first sorority cofounded by African American
9college men of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity desiring sisters representing Finer Womanhood,
10Scholarship, Service, and Sisterhood; and
11 WHEREAS, throughout the past ninety-three years, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority has
12expanded internationally to more than one thousand chapters in eight countries; and
13 WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana hosts thirty of these chapters, which are located
14on college and university campuses and have active graduate groups in communities
15throughout the state; and
16 WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is action oriented and committed to community
17service and actively contributes to the educational, civic, and social life of Louisiana's
18citizens; and
19 WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta chapters encourage their members to become informed,
20involved, and committed community volunteers in one of their service initiatives, including
21education, family, health, politics, the economy, and the arts; and

1 WHEREAS, Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Bernette J. Johnson is a proud
2graduate member of Zeta Phi Beta; and
3 WHEREAS, the current program of Zeta Phi Beta is "Building on the Principles of
4Service While Blazing New Paths"; and
5 WHEREAS, Zeta Day at the state capitol is part of Zeta Phi Beta's political initiative
6across the country through which members network with legislators to address issues that
7are relevant to their communities.
8 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
9Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Tuesday, May 10, 2016, as Zeta Phi Beta
10Day at the Louisiana State Capitol and does hereby commend and express enduring
11appreciation to the members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, for the tremendous
12service, honor, and pride that they bring to their families, friends, communities, the state of
13Louisiana, and the United States of America.
14 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
15to Mary Breaux Wright, International President of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.
