HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 71
BY REPRESENTATIVES CARPENTER, HALL, AND JENKINS
A RESOLUTION
To recognize Tuesday, May 10, 2016, as Zeta Phi Beta Day at the state capitol and to
commend the members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend the members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,
Incorporated, for their outstanding community service and to recognize Tuesday, May 10,
2016, as Zeta Day at the state capitol; and
WHEREAS, founded at Howard University in Washington D.C., in 1920, Zeta Phi
Beta Sorority has the distinction of being the first sorority cofounded by African American
college men of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity desiring sisters representing Finer Womanhood,
Scholarship, Service, and Sisterhood; and
WHEREAS, throughout the past ninety-three years, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority has
expanded internationally to more than one thousand chapters in eight countries; and
WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana hosts thirty of these chapters, which are located
on college and university campuses and have active graduate groups in communities
throughout the state; and
WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is action oriented and committed to community
service and actively contributes to the educational, civic, and social life of Louisiana's
citizens; and
WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta chapters encourage their members to become informed,
involved, and committed community volunteers in one of their service initiatives, including
education, family, health, politics, the economy, and the arts; and
WHEREAS, Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Bernette J. Johnson is a proud
graduate member of Zeta Phi Beta; and
WHEREAS, the current program of Zeta Phi Beta is "Building on the Principles of
Service While Blazing New Paths"; and

WHEREAS, Zeta Day at the state capitol is part of Zeta Phi Beta's political initiative
across the country through which members network with legislators to address issues that
are relevant to their communities.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Tuesday, May 10, 2016, as Zeta Phi Beta
Day at the Louisiana State Capitol and does hereby commend and express enduring
appreciation to the members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, for the tremendous
service, honor, and pride that they bring to their families, friends, communities, the state of
Louisiana, and the United States of America.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Mary Breaux Wright, International President of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.
