HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 86

COMMENDATIONS:  Commends the Merryville High School girls' basketball team upon
reaching the 2015-2016 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 1A
championship game
1	A RESOLUTION
2To commend the Merryville High School girls' basketball team upon reaching the 2015-
3 2016 Class 1A championship.
4 WHEREAS, for the first time in the history of Merryville High School, the 2015-
52016 girls' basketball team made it to the state finals; and
6 WHEREAS, the Merryville High School girls' basketball team capped its sensational
7season of thirty-two wins against one loss by competing in the Allstate Sugar Bowl
8Louisiana High School Athletic Association Top 28 Class 1A title game and gave Number 1
9seed Arcadia an exceptional battle, ultimately falling 66-62 to the 2015-2016 Class 1A
10champs; and
11 WHEREAS, head coach Mark Perow, ably assisted by assistant coach Molly Slaydon
12and team managers Rosie Jeans, Lakeitha Hopkins, and Marcus Perow, guided the
13Merryville Lady Panthers to a 14-0 record in the district, a district championship, and have
14instilled in their players the kind of leadership and motivational skills needed to succeed
15both on and off the court; and
16 WHEREAS, sophomore Andrea Cournoyer, Class 1A Most Outstanding Player and
17one of the state's top scorers with an average of more than thirty points per game, tossed in
18thirty-five points in a valiant effort for Merryville; in the tournament, Ms. Cournoyer broke
19a forty-nine-year-old record for the most combined points scored by a Class 1A player in the
20Top 28 with sixty-nine points; and

1 WHEREAS, the 2015-2016 Merryville High School girls' basketball team consists
2of Caitlin Bateman, Carlye Blackmon, Ja'Cinda Carter, Andrea Cournoyer, Alyssa Duncan,
3Shakietha Hill, Mekyah Hooper, Lillian Jeans, Raeleigh Joshlin, Kaylie Lewis, Maddie
4Mahfouz, Katie McCann, Jenna Reeves, Jania Williams, and Kelsie Williams; and
5 WHEREAS, through its display of good sportsmanship and dedication to excellence,
6the Merryville High School girls' basketball team has brought a tremendous sense of honor
7and pride to its school and surrounding community.
8 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
9Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Merryville High School girls' basketball
10team upon reaching the 2015-2016 Class 1A state championship and becoming the state
11runner-up; does hereby express sincere and heartfelt congratulations to the Lady Panthers
12in recognition of their outstanding athletic abilities and their thrilling season; and does
13hereby extend to the team and its coaches best wishes for continued success in the future.
14 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
15to Mark Perow, head coach of the Merryville High School girls' basketball team.
