Present law prohibits the concealed carry of any firearm or other instrument customarily used as a
dangerous weapon.
Proposed law creates an exception and allows a Louisiana resident 21 years of age or older to carry
a concealed handgun if the resident is not prohibited from possessing a firearm under a state or
federal law.
Proposed law provides that the firearm must be a handgun commonly referred to as a pistol or
revolver designed to be fired by the use of a single hand and that is designed to fire or is capable of
firing fixed cartridge ammunition.
Proposed law prohibits the concealed carry of shotguns or rifles that have been altered by having
their stocks or barrels cut or shortened.
Effective August 1, 2016.
