SLS 16RS-3365 ORIGINAL 2016 Regular Session SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 126 BY SENATOR COLOMB COMMENDATIONS. Commends the service and contributions of The Links, Incorporated, and recognizes May 25, 2016, as Louisiana Links Day at the state capitol. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To commend the efforts of The Links, Incorporated, and to designate Wednesday, May 25, 3 2016, as Louisiana Links Day at the state capitol. 4 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated, is an international organization of women of 5 color dedicated to improving the quality of life for humankind; and 6 WHEREAS, the worldwide organization consists of fourteen thousand members in 7 two hundred eighty chapters in forty-one states, the District of Colombia, and the 8 Commonwealth of the Bahamas; and 9 WHEREAS, there are eight Links chapters in the state of Louisiana, namely the 10 Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Crescent City, LaCapitale, Monroe-Grambling, New Orleans, 11 Pontchartrain, and Shreveport chapters; and 12 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated, was founded in 1946 by Margaret Hawkins 13 and Sarah Scott in hopes of promoting civic, educational, and cultural concerns through the 14 creation of their service organization; and 15 WHEREAS, the members of The Links, Incorporated, are influential decision makers 16 and opinion leaders; and 17 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated, has attracted many distinguished women who 18 are individual achievers and who have made a difference in their communities and in the Page 1 of 3 SCR NO. 126 SLS 16RS-3365 ORIGINAL 1 world; and 2 WHEREAS, the members of The Links, Incorporated, are business and civic leaders, 3 role models, mentors, activists, and volunteers who work towards a common vision by 4 engaging like-minded organizations and individuals as partners; and 5 WHEREAS, the outstanding programming of The Links, Incorporated, has five 6 facets, which are National Trends and Services, the Arts, Services to Youth, International 7 Trends and Services, and Health and Human Services; and 8 WHEREAS, the programs are implemented through strategies such as public 9 information and education, economic development, and public policy campaigns; and 10 WHEREAS, the mission of The Links, Incorporated, has been to discern a need and 11 to fulfill it, which The Links has done by donating money and time to charitable efforts, 12 including one million dollars to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored 13 People and two million dollars to the United Negro College Fund; and 14 WHEREAS, its members contribute more than five hundred thousand documented 15 hours of community service annually, strengthening their communities and enhancing the 16 nation; and 17 WHEREAS, Links Day at the capitol is a project of the southern area of The Links, 18 Incorporated, which includes chapters in the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, 19 Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina; and 20 WHEREAS, the first Louisiana Links Day at the state capitol occurred on May 19, 21 2005; and 22 WHEREAS, the members of Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2005 to 23 inform their legislators that they supported legislation and the development of policies in line 24 with Healthy People 2010; and 25 WHEREAS, the members of Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2006 to 26 inform their legislators that they supported legislation and the development of policies that 27 provided funding and infrastructure necessary to improve health care in Louisiana; and 28 WHEREAS, the members of Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2007 to 29 inform their legislators that they supported legislation and the development of policies that 30 closed the gap in poverty and education, that provided adequate and affordable health care Page 2 of 3 SCR NO. 126 SLS 16RS-3365 ORIGINAL 1 to all citizens, that brought Louisiana people home, that revitalized New Orleans public 2 schools, and that guaranteed displaced Louisiana voters their constitutional right to vote; and 3 WHEREAS, the members of Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2008 to 4 inform their legislators that they supported legislation and the development of policies aimed 5 at reducing the obesity rate for children in Louisiana and other healthcare and education 6 initiatives aimed at creating a better quality of life in Louisiana; and 7 WHEREAS, the members of Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2009, 2010, 8 2011, and 2012, to advocate for health care and education policies that would continue to 9 improve the lives of all Louisiana citizens; and 10 WHEREAS, the members of Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2013 to 11 advocate for laws and policies in health care, education, voting rights, gun control, and equal 12 pay for women; and 13 WHEREAS, in 2014, the members of Louisiana Links voiced their concern and 14 continued support of programs seeking to enrich, sustain, and ensure the cultural and 15 economic survival of African Americans and persons of African ancestry; and 16 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated, merits a special measure of commendation as 17 they visit the Louisiana state capitol on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, for Louisiana Links Day. 18 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 19 commend the efforts of The Links, Incorporated, and does hereby designate Wednesday, 20 May 25, 2016, as Louisiana Links Day at the state capitol. 21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the 22 southern area director of The Links, Incorporated.
