SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 129

COMMENDATIONS. Commends Jim Hawthorne upon receiving the 2016 Distinguished
Service Award in Sports Journalism and for being named to the 2016 Louisiana Sports Hall
of Fame.
1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2 To commend and congratulate Jim Hawthorne for receiving the 2016 Distinguished Service
3 Award in Sports Journalism and on being named to the 2016 Louisiana Sports Hall
4 of Fame Induction Class.
5 WHEREAS, the Distinguished Service Award in Sports Journalism is the most
6 prestigious honor offered to sports media in Louisiana; and
7 WHEREAS, inductees are carefully chosen after an extensive deliberation by a
8 thirty-member expert panel of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame selection committee based
9 on their professional accomplishments in local, state, regional and national arenas; and
10 WHEREAS, the respected and admired "Voice of the Tigers" Jim Hawthorne is the
11 2016 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award in Sports Journalism and a member of
12 the 2016 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class; and
13 WHEREAS, Mr. Hawthorne is an Anacoco, Louisiana, native and 1967
14 Northwestern State University graduate, he has established himself as one of the top
15 play-by-play commentators in all of collegiate athletics; and
16 WHEREAS, for more than forty years he has been calling the action on football,
17 basketball, and baseball broadcasts and serves as the director of broadcasting for Louisiana
18 State University Sports Radio Network, and has called the plays for the Tiger's 2003 and

1 2007 Bowl Championship Series National Championship victories, as well as six national
2 titles in baseball and three National Collegiate Athletic Association Final Four appearances
3 in basketball; and
4 WHEREAS, the long and successful career of Jim Hawthorne has rightly earned him
5 the 2016 Distinguished Service Award in Sports Journalism and a place among the many
6 greats in the Louisiana Sports Hall of fame.
7 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
8 commend and congratulate Jim Hawthorne for receiving the 2016 Distinguished Service
9 Award in Sports Journalism and for being named to the 2016 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame
10 Induction Class.
11 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Jim
12 Hawthorne.
