LEGIS POWERS/FUNCTIONS. Declares April 26, 2016, as "Purple and Teal Day" in
Louisiana.
1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2 To declare April 26, 2016, as "Purple and Teal Day" in the state of Louisiana.
3 WHEREAS, the members of the Legislature of Louisiana recognize the need to
4 address violence against women; and
5 WHEREAS, domestic violence and sexual assault are serious crimes that affect
6 people of all races, ages, gender, and income levels; and
7 WHEREAS, domestic violence and sexual assault are widespread and affect millions
8 of Americans each year; and
9 WHEREAS, children who grow up in violent homes are believed to be abused and
10 neglected at higher rates than the national average; and
11 WHEREAS, women are murdered at a rate about forty percent higher than the
12 national average in Louisiana, and Louisiana consistently leads the nation in domestic
13 homicides; and
14 WHEREAS, the crimes of domestic violence and sexual assault violate an
15 individual's privacy, dignity, security, and humanity due to the systematic use of physical,
16 emotional, sexual, psychological, and economic control and abuse; and
17 WHEREAS, on April 26, 2016, the Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence
18 and the Louisiana Foundation Against Sexual Assault host their annual day at the Louisiana

1 State Capitol with a display on the steps and rotunda of the Capitol; and
2 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence is the federally
3 designated statewide coalition of shelters, nonresidential programs and individuals working
4 to end domestic violence in Louisiana; and
5 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Foundation Against Sexual Assault is the federally
6 designated membership organization of sexual assault crisis centers across the state of
7 Louisiana; and
8 WHEREAS, Purple and Teal Day provides an excellent opportunity for citizens of
9 Louisiana to learn more about preventing domestic violence and sexual assault and show
10 support for the numerous organizations and individuals who provide critical advocacy,
11 services and assistance to victims.
12 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
13 declare April 26, 2016, as "Purple and Teal Day" in the state of Louisiana, does hereby
14 commend and encourage diligence against violence against women, and does hereby urge
15 all citizens and all community organizations to join in this observance.
16 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the
17 Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
