2016 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 96 BY SENATOR LONG A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION To commend and congratulate Collier "P. J." Brown Jr. on being named to the 2016 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. WHEREAS, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in Natchitoches, Louisiana, each year collaborates with the Louisiana Sports Writers Association in selecting a limited number of sports figures who embody the character, skill, and talents worthy of being named to the hall of fame; and WHEREAS, the 2016 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class includes basketball great P. J. Brown; and WHEREAS, a former Winnfield Senior High School and Louisiana Tech University standout, P. J. Brown played fifteen years in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with five teams, including four years with the New Orleans Hornets; and WHEREAS, as a second-round draft pick of the New Jersey Nets in 1992, where he played for three years, he distinguished himself as a defensive stalwart during his career; and WHEREAS, from 1996 until 2000, he played with the Miami Heat, where he received the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award, was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team twice, and averaged a career high of 11.4 points a game; and WHEREAS, on August 1, 2000, P. J. Brown was traded to the Charlotte Hornets and in his first season with the team was awarded his third NBA All-Defensive Second Team and was the recipient of the NBA Sportsmanship Award; and WHEREAS, prior to the 2002-2003 season the Hornets relocated to New Orleans, where his stellar career continued and he was awarded the NBA Community Assist Award, was chosen as the Central Division recipient of the NBA Sportsmanship Award for the second consecutive time, and in 2004, received the NBA Sportsmanship Award, and during Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 96 ENROLLED the 2006-2007 season became one of only twenty-six players in NBA history to have eight thousand points, seven thousand rebounds, one thousand assists, and one thousand blocks; and WHEREAS, upon leaving the Hornets in 2006, he continued his career with the Chicago Bulls and then the Boston Celtics, proving himself an excellent teammate on and off the court and at the end of the 2008 season, retired after fifteen years of professional basketball success; and WHEREAS, the stellar career of P. J. Brown has rightly earned him a place among the many greats in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Collier "P. J." Brown Jr. on being named to the 2016 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class.
