SLS 16RS-2861 ORIGINAL 2016 Regular Session SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 119 BY SENATOR BARROW COMMENDATIONS. Commends the contributions, unique skillsets, and sacrifices of Louisiana's women veterans. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To commend and recognize the contributions, unique skillsets, and sacrifices of Louisiana's 3 women veterans. 4 WHEREAS, women began their service in the United States military, out of 5 necessity, during the Revolutionary War, in which they were laundresses, nurses, and cooks; 6 some women disguised themselves as men and bravely fought in combat; after nearly two 7 centuries of hard work and dedication to the United States Military, congress passed the 8 Women's Armed Services Integration Act; and 9 WHEREAS, with the passage of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act, 10 women were granted permanent status in the military and were entitled to military benefits; 11 during the Gulf War, women were called upon to perform a wider variety of duties than ever 12 before and have performed admirably in nearly every role, from pilots to intelligence to 13 commanding officers; and 14 WHEREAS, the number of courageous women volunteering to serve our country has 15 continually increased according to the National Center for Veterans Analysis and Statistics, 16 as of 2014, women veterans represent approximately ten percent of the United States veteran 17 population, including 31,905 of these women in the state of Louisiana; and 18 WHEREAS, the population of women veterans is expected to increase to Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 119 SLS 16RS-2861 ORIGINAL 1 approximately thirteen percent nationally and to nearly fifteen percent in the state of 2 Louisiana in the next fifteen years; these mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends risk their 3 lives to serve both domestically and abroad to protect the rights and freedoms of all 4 Americans; and 5 WHEREAS, women are an integral part of the military because of their growing 6 numbers and leadership positions; their unique skillsets make them a vital facet of our armed 7 forces; and 8 WHEREAS, Louisiana women veterans are true heroes who have served their 9 country with pride and honor, and it is appropriate to recognize the sacrifices and 10 contributions of these great women. 11 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 12 does hereby commend Louisiana's women veterans for their distinguished service in the 13 United States Armed Forces; does hereby recognize their vital role in protecting the rights 14 and freedoms of Americans; and does hereby express enduring appreciation for the 15 dedication, contributions, and sacrifices to our country and the great pride women veterans 16 bring to the state of Louisiana.
