Church Day in the Louisiana Senate. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To designate Wednesday, May 25, 2016, as Nelson Chapel A.M.E. Church Day in the 3 Louisiana Senate. 4 WHEREAS, the African Methodist Episcopal Church (A.M.E. Church) was founded 5 by Richard Allen in 1787 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as a connectional church; and 6 WHEREAS, the word "African" means that the church was organized by people of 7 African descent and heritage; and does not mean that the church was founded in Africa or 8 that it was for persons of African descent only; and 9 WHEREAS, the A.M.E. Church has more than one million members scattered across 10 the United States, Canada, South America, West Africa, South Africa, and the West Indies; 11 and 12 WHEREAS, the Nelson Chapel A.M.E. Church of Napoleonville, Louisiana, 13 Assumption Parish, was organized in 1869 and named after its founder, the late Reverend 14 J. J. Nelson; and 15 WHEREAS, Nelson Chapel A.M.E. Church is located within the boundaries of the 16 Eighth Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Church and within the Alexandria-Thibodaux 17 Presiding Elder District. 18 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 154 SLS 16RS-3555 ORIGINAL 1 does hereby designate Wednesday, May 25, 2016, as Nelson Chapel A.M.E. Church Day in 2 the Louisiana Senate. 3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be presented to the 4 Right Reverend Julius Harrison McAllister Sr., Presiding Bishop of the Eighth Episcopal 5 District, and Reverend Gwendolyn E.
