SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 93

A RESOLUTION
To express the sincere and heartfelt condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of
Louisiana upon the death of Dick Walther, doctor of veterinary medicine.
WHEREAS, it is with great sadness that the citizens and the Senate of the Legislature
of Louisiana have learned of the death of Dick Walther on March 25, 2016, at the age of
eighty-six; and
WHEREAS, Dick Walther was a lifelong resident of Terrebonne Parish who
established his practice of clinical veterinary medicine in 1955; and
WHEREAS, the professional and civic affiliations of Dr. Walther were myriad: he
was a member of the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association; in 1992, Dr. Walther was
named Veterinarian of the Year by the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association; he held
membership in the American Veterinary Medical Association; he served on the Louisiana
State Board of Veterinary Medicine and the Louisiana Livestock Sanitary Board; he was a
member of the Terrebonne Parish Farm Bureau and the Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of
Commerce; Dr. Walther was a past president of the Terrebonne Parish Cattleman's
Association, the Louisiana Cattleman's Association, and the National Cattleman's
Association; he was a board member of the Louisiana 4-H Foundation; and Dr. Walther was
elected to the national honorary extension fraternity, Epsilon Sigma Phi; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Walther maintained a herd of Charolais cattle, a breed first imported
from France in the 1930s by French ranchers to protect them from destruction in World War
II; and
WHEREAS, left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ernestine Smith Walther; sons
John Walther and his wife Carolyn, Dan Walther, Glen Walther, DVM, and his wife Monica,
and Ben Walther; brother Roy Walther and his wife Mary; and four grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, although his passing will leave a void in his community and Louisiana
that can never be filled, recollections of good times, happy occasions, and the warmth of his
presence will forever remain in the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved
Dr. Dick Walther.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby express sincere and most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends who
mourn the passing of Dick Walther, DVM; and does hereby extend thoughts and prayers for
peace and comfort to his friends and family.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Ernestine Smith Walther.
