SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 96
BY SENATOR COLOMB 
SENATE.  Recognizes Tuesday, May 3, 2016, as Susan G. Komen Day at the legislature.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To commend Susan G. KomenĀ® Louisiana Affiliates for their efforts to save lives and end
3 breast cancer in local communities through the delivery of breast cancer education,
4 screening, treatment and research and to recognize Tuesday, May 3, 2016, as Susan
5 G. Komen Day at the Louisiana Legislature.
6 WHEREAS, Susan G. Komen is the world's largest grassroots network of breast
7 cancer survivors and advocates fighting together to save lives, empower people, ensure
8 quality care for all, and energize science to find breast cancer cures; and 
9 WHEREAS, except for skin cancer, beast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed
10 cancer in women in the United States; and 
11 WHEREAS, among the fifty states, Louisiana ranks the second highest in breast
12 cancer mortality, despite the fact that the breast cancer incidence rate in Louisiana is lower
13 than the national average; and
14 WHEREAS, this year in Louisiana, it is estimated that over three thousand new cases
15 of breast cancer will be diagnosed in women, and over six hundred Louisiana women will
16 die of the disease, many of them facing a late-stage diagnosis involving fewer treatment
17 options and lower chances of survival; and 
18 WHEREAS, approximately 16.3% of Louisiana residents are uninsured and, as a

1 consequence, many of them facing a late-stage diagnosis involving fewer treatment options
2 and lower chances of survival; and 
3 WHEREAS, Susan G. Komen Louisiana Affiliates honor their mission to save lives
4 and end breast cancer forever by advocating to preserve full state funding and matching
5 federal funding to the Louisiana Breast and Cervical Health Program to ensure that the
6 program continues to provide breast cancer early detection services to women in the state;
7 and 
8 WHEREAS, Susan G. Komen Louisiana Affiliates continue their mission locally,
9 nationally, and globally to identify the cures that will end breast cancer as a life threatening
10 disease and to provide community-based support to the women and men who are fighting
11 breast cancer today, including those in the state of Louisiana. 
12 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
13 does hereby commend Susan G. Komen Louisiana Affiliates for their unwavering dedication
14 to the fight against breast cancer and does hereby recognize Tuesday, May 3, 2016, as Susan
15 G. Komen Day at the Louisiana Legislature.
