COMMENDATIONS: Commends Mia Gaines upon becoming a member of the 2016-2017
coterie of debutantes presented by the Nu Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Incorporated
1 A RESOLUTION
2To commend Mia Geneice Gaines upon becoming a member of the 2016-2017 coterie of
3 debutantes presented by the Nu Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha
4 Sorority, Incorporated.
5 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Miss Mia Geneice Gaines upon being
6selected to join the 2016-2017 coterie of debutantes presented by the Nu Gamma Omega
7Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; and
8 WHEREAS, founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908, Alpha
9Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has the distinction of being the first sorority established
10by African-American college women; and
11 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha’s mission is to cultivate and encourage high
12scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to
13study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their
14social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of "Service to All
15Mankind"; and
16 WHEREAS, on February 16, 1980, the Nu Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa
17Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was chartered as the second alumnae chapter in the Baton
18Rouge Metropolitan area; and
19 WHEREAS, the chapter, through its annual sponsorship of the coterie of debutantes,
20is able to introduce worthy young ladies into society, provide scholarships for academic

1achievers, and uphold the sorority's mission to raise the status of African-American girls and
2women; and
3 WHEREAS, Miss Mia Geneice Gaines has been selected for the distinguished honor
4of joining the 2016-2017 coterie of debutantes presented by Nu Gamma Omega; and
5 WHEREAS, Miss Gaines is the beloved granddaughter of Geneva Jordan, the late
6Lionel James, the late Margie Gaines, and the late Henry Gaines; and
7 WHEREAS, Miss Gaines is a senior at Dutchtown High School in Geismar,
8Louisiana, where she maintains an impressive 3.28 GPA; and
9 WHEREAS, she is a member of the Dutchtown High School track and field team,
10vocal ensemble, thespians, and Honor Society; she also serves as a youth intern at Healing
11Place Church; and
12 WHEREAS, upon graduation, Miss Gaines plans to attend Louisiana State University
13where she will pursue a degree in Performing Arts; and
14 WHEREAS, the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of our communities,
15and the overall vitality of American society depend upon the dedication and talents of young
16people like Miss Gaines; and
17 WHEREAS, Miss Gaines merits a special measure of commendation for the pride
18and honor she brings to her family, friends, community, and to the state of Louisiana.
19 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
20Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Miss Mia Geneice Gaines upon joining the
212016-2017 coterie of debutantes presented by the Nu Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha
22Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; does hereby recognize and record for posterity her
23outstanding achievements and singular contributions; and does hereby extend to her best
24wishes for continued success and happiness in her future endeavors.
25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
26to Mia Geneice Gaines.
