INSURANCE/GROUP-SHERIFFS: Provides relative to group insurance benefits of the
Madison Parish Sheriff's Office
1 AN ACT
2To enact R.S. 13:5554(W)(4), relative to group insurance benefits for retired sheriffs and
3 deputy sheriffs of the Madison Parish Sheriff's Department; to provide for the
4 availability of certain insurance benefits to certain retired employees; and to provide
5 for related matters.
6Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
7 Section 1. R.S. 13:5554(W)(4) is hereby enacted to read as follows:
8 ยง5554. Group insurance; kinds; amounts; subrogation

10 W. Notwithstanding the provisions of Subsection D of this Section, the
11 sheriff of Madison Parish shall pay out of the sheriff's general fund the premium
12 costs of group insurance for any retired sheriff and any retired deputy sheriff who
13 retires from the Madison Parish Sheriff's Department as follows:

15 (4) For any sheriff or deputy sheriff who retires on and after July 1, 2017,
16 one hundred percent of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, medical
17 expense, dental insurance, and life insurance contracted for under the provisions of
18 this Section, if the sheriff or deputy sheriff retires with twenty-four years or more of
19 continuous service with the Madison Parish Sheriff's Department and is at least fifty-
20 five years of age.

Abstract: Provides that 100% of the premium costs of certain insurance benefits shall be
available to sheriffs and deputy sheriffs who retire on and after July 1, 2017, with 24
years or more of continuous service with the Madison Parish Sheriff's Department
and who are at least 55 years of age.
Present law provides that 100% of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, medical
expense, dental insurance, and the first $10,000 of life insurance shall be available to sheriffs
and deputy sheriffs who retired prior to July 1, 2009, with either: (a) at least 15 years of
service at age 55 or older; or (b) at least 30 years or more of service at any age.
Present law provides that 100% of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, medical
expense, dental insurance, and life insurance shall be available to any sheriff or deputy
sheriff who retires on and after July 1, 2009, and who has continuous service with the
Madison Parish Sheriff's Department of either: (a) at least 15 years as of June 30, 2009; or
(b) 30 years.
Proposed law retains present law and also provides that 100% of the premium costs of group
hospital, surgical, medical expense, dental insurance, and life insurance shall be available
to sheriffs and deputy sheriffs who retire on and after July 1, 2017, with 24 years or more
of continuous service with the Madison Parish Sheriff's Department and who are at least 55
years of age.

Summary of Amendments Adopted by House
The Committee Amendments Proposed by House Committee on Judiciary to the original
bill:
1. Add that a sheriff or deputy sheriff must reach the age of 55 in order to receive
the premium costs of certain insurance benefits pursuant to proposed law.
