HEALTH CARE: Amends the Polysomnographic Practice Act.
DIGEST
Present law provides that a polysomnographic technologist license may be issued by the La.
State Bd. of Medical Examiners (LSBME) if the applicant demonstrates all of the following:
(1)Good moral character.
(2)Has current credentials as a registered polysomnographic technologist granted by the
Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists or equivalent organization
approved by the LSBME.
(3)After July 1, 2017, the following requirements shall also be met:
(a)Applicant has graduated from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health
Education Program (CAAHEP).
(b)Applicant has passed an examination that is administered as a component of a
certification program that is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying
Agencies, the American National Standards Institute, or other national accrediting
organizations approved by the LSBME.
(4)Satisfies such other procedures and requirements as the LSBME may require.
Proposed law repeals requirement that the applicant has graduated from a CAAHEP
accredited program.
Present law prohibits an individual from engaging or attempting to engage in the practice of
polysomnography or performing or attempting to perform polysomnograms, unless the
individual is licensed by the LSBME.
Present law provides an exception for an individual enrolled in a program accredited by the
CAAHEP if both of the following conditions are met:
(1)The polysomnographic procedure or service is within the individual's course of study.
(2)The polysomnography procedure or service is performed under the direct supervision
of a physician or a polysomnographic technologist licensed by the LSBME.
Proposed law provides that the exception shall apply to any individual pursuing a course of
study in a polysomnographic technology education program approved by the LSBME.
Proposed law repeals the definition of Association of Polysomnographic Technologists.
Requires the LSBME to promulgate all administrative rules and amendments necessary to
bring its policies and procedures into conformance with the provisions of proposed law.
Present law provides that provisions of this Chapter shall not apply to licensed respiratory
therapists.
Proposed law provides that the Chapter does not prohibit, prevent, or restrict practice of an
individual pursuing a course of study in a program accredited by the Commission on

the individual's course of study and is performed under the direct supervision of a physician
or polysomnographic technologist licensed by LSBME.

1. Provides that a polysomnographic technologist license applicant is not required
to have graduated from a CAAHEO accredited program.
2. Provides that an individual pursuing a course study in polysomnographic
technology from an education program approved by LSBME shall not be
prohibited, prevented, or restricted from practice by this Chapter.
3. Provides that the Chapter does not prohibit, prevent, or restrict practice of an
individual pursuing a course of study in a program accredited by the Commission
on Accreditation for Respiratory Care if the polysomnographic procedure or
service is within the individual's course of study and is performed under the direct
supervision of a physician or polysomnographic technologist licensed by
LSBME.
