LAW ENFORCEMENT:  Provides relative to certification requirements for law
enforcement officers investigating traffic fatalities
1	AN ACT
2To amend and reenact R.S. 40:2405.8(B), relative to homicide investigator training; to
3 provide an exception to homicide investigator training requirements for peace
4 officers investigating vehicular homicide; and to provide for related matters.
5Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1.  R.S. 40:2405.8(B) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:
7 ยง2405.8.  Additional peace officer training requirements

9	B.  Homicide Investigator.  The council shall create and maintain a current
10 list of those peace officers who have successfully completed the homicide
11 investigator training program for purposes of coordinating homicide investigations
12 occurring in the state.  Except for peace officers investigating cases of vehicular
13 homicide as defined in R.S. 14:32.1, On on and after January 1, 2017, only peace
14 officers who successfully complete the homicide investigator training program or
15 receive a waiver of compliance based on prior training or experience as a homicide
16 investigator shall be assigned to lead investigations in homicide cases.

Abstract:  Exempts peace officers who are investigating vehicular homicide from homicide
investigator training requirements.
Present law requires that all peace officers assigned to lead investigations in homicide cases
successfully complete the homicide investigator training program or receive a waiver based
on prior training or experience.
Proposed law exempts peace officers investigating cases of vehicular homicide from
completing the homicide investigator training program.
