CONDOLENCES:  Expresses sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Sgt.
Shawn T. Anderson of the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office who was killed
in the line of duty

2To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Sergeant Shawn T. Anderson
3 of the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office who was killed in the line of duty.
4 WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the
5Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the death of Sergeant Shawn T. Anderson, a truly
6exceptional law enforcement officer and citizen, on Saturday, March 18, 2017, at the age of
7forty-three; and
8 WHEREAS, Sergeant Shawn T. Anderson, who was killed in the line of duty as a
9sergeant with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office, performed his responsibilities
10in an outstanding fashion, and it is fitting to pay tribute to him for his faithful service and
11ultimate sacrifice; and
12 WHEREAS, Shawn Anderson was the loving husband of Becky Davis Anderson and
13the proud father of two children, Delaney Grace and Breland Thomas Anderson; and
14 WHEREAS, a 1992 graduate of Baker High School, where he played on the baseball
15team, Shawn Anderson served for three years in the United States Army at Fort Sill,
16Oklahoma, where he was assigned to Multiple Launch Rocket Systems; and
17 WHEREAS, following his honorable discharge from the Army, Shawn returned to
18Baton Rouge, and in May of 1999, he began his long and highly productive career with the
19East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office, first serving at the parish prison and going on to

1serve in various divisions, including narcotics, the emergency services unit, and the maritime
2response team; and
3 WHEREAS, Sergeant Anderson transferred to the canine division and became a
4master handler and trainer; and
5 WHEREAS, working uniform patrol, Sergeant Anderson served the Burbank,
6Scotlandville, and Kleinpeter Substations, and he was also a member of the SWAT team for
7eleven years, serving courageously as a breacher; and 
8 WHEREAS, Sergeant Anderson distinguished himself as a model of excellence and
9was recognized with numerous awards and honors, including the Life Saving Award in 2010
10for saving the life of a woman on the old Mississippi River Bridge; recognition in 2014 for
11serving more than sixty high-risk warrants the previous year with SWAT with no injuries
12or shots fired; and recognition in March of 2016 for safely delivering a baby boy whose
13parents had pulled over in their vehicle en route to the hospital; and
14 WHEREAS, with steadfast diligence and dedication, Sergeant Anderson was fair and
15honest in his work, and he displayed his innate goodness and strength of character through
16his everyday actions, making him widely respected and admired by his peers and by the
17citizens he encountered on the job; and 
18 WHEREAS, Sergeant Anderson was an avid LSU fan and enjoyed hunting in his
19spare time but above all was a devoted family man who loved being with his family and
20friends and most especially cheering from the sidelines at his children's sporting activities;
21and
22 WHEREAS, Sergeant Anderson is survived by his wife, Becky Davis Anderson, and
23their two children, Delaney Grace Anderson and Breland Thomas Anderson; his mother,
24Carol Anderson Bergeron; his brother, Jackie Anderson, and his wife Stefanie Anderson; his
25brother, Dustin Martin; his sisters, Debbie Anderson, Paula Ledford, Renee Anderson, and
26Kristin Martin; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Joan Davis; his sister-in-law,
27Tammy Davis Conrad, and her husband Richard T. Conrad III; numerous nieces and
28nephews; countless friends, including his very special friends, Les and Pat Rainey; and his
29East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office family; he was preceded in death by his father, Jack
30Anderson; and

1 WHEREAS, the death of Shawn Anderson leaves an unspeakable emptiness in the
2hearts of his family members and friends, who may find comfort in the knowledge that he
3lived his life according to deeply held principles and that his enduring legacy will continue
4to be an inspiration to others; and
5 WHEREAS, Sergeant Anderson also will be mourned and sorely missed by those
6who had the honor of serving with him and who will always remember him as a selfless
7brother and cherished friend; and
8 WHEREAS, Sergeant Anderson upheld the traditions of the East Baton Rouge Parish
9Sheriff's Office for nearly eighteen years of superb service and brought honor to his family,
10his friends, his community, his state, and this nation; and
11 WHEREAS, Shawn Anderson was an extraordinary public servant whose helpful and
12heroic actions in serving and protecting his fellow citizens routinely went far above and
13beyond the call of duty and whose singular contributions have left an indelible mark on the
14hearts of the people of East Baton Rouge Parish and beyond; and
15 WHEREAS, the death of Sergeant Shawn Anderson has created a tremendous void
16in his community and a genuine sense of shock and sorrow in the many citizens whose lives
17he touched, all of whom mourn the loss of the friendly nature, bright mind, and kind and
18generous spirit of this beloved man whose memory shall forever remain a source of deep
19pride for all who knew and loved him. 
20 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
21express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Sergeant Shawn T. Anderson;
22does hereby recognize his exemplary service as a sergeant with the East Baton Rouge Parish
23Sheriff's Office; does hereby record for posterity his steadfast adherence to the highest
24standards of valor and integrity; does hereby acknowledge with profound gratitude the
25bravery of this extraordinary man who gave his life in the service of others; and does hereby
26extend deepest regret upon the loss of this wonderful individual who will forever be
27remembered for his service to his fellow citizens, the parish of East Baton Rouge, the state
28of Louisiana, and the United States of America.
29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
30to the family of Sergeant Shawn T. Anderson.
