HLS 17RS-1579 ORIGINAL 2017 Regular Session HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 48 BY REPRESENTATIVE HENSGENS AND SENATOR PERRY COMMENDATIONS: Commends the Gueydan High School girls' basketball team upon winning the 2017 Class A state championship 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2To commend the Gueydan High School girls' basketball team for winning the 2017 Class A 3 state championship. 4 WHEREAS, the athletes of the Gueydan High School girls' basketball team 5completed a sensational 2016-2017 season when they earned the state championship title in 6the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Girls tournament at University Center at 7Southeastern Louisiana University on Friday, March 3, 2017; and 8 WHEREAS, the 53-40 win over North Central marked Gueydan High School's first 9state championship in four trips to the tournament; the Gueydan Honeybears were led in the 10title game by senior forward T'Nia Leger's nineteen points and six rebounds and sophomore 11center Kendra Petry's fifteen points and four rebounds; and 12 WHEREAS, point guard Ke'Ara Charles was named the game's Most Valuable 13Player for making crucial assists and adding three steals, seven rebounds, and eight points 14to the victory; and 15 WHEREAS, the Gueydan girls' team finished the 2016-2017 season with twenty- 16seven wins, ten losses, and an 11-3 district record; and 17 WHEREAS, the members of the team performed at the highest levels of excellence 18throughout the season, and each Honeybear deserves recognition for her vital contributions 19to the winning effort; and 20 WHEREAS, seniors Ke'Ara Charles, Cheyenne LaComb, T'Nia Leger, and Lea 21Wesley; juniors Emily Gaspard, Erin Johnson, and Ashari Terry; sophomores Kendra Petry Page 1 of 2 HLS 17RS-1579 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 48 1and Kelsey Williams; freshmen Kendra LaComb, Rebekah Lepretre, and Kirsten Reed; and 2eighth graders Ryleigh Istre and Madisyn LeDay comported themselves magnificently in the 3title game; and 4 WHEREAS, team managers Malori Dupree, Emma Guidry, Vada Hargrave, and 5Emily LaComb; team trainer Katie McBain; and statistician Shae Romero contributed to the 6success of the team by capably and admirably performing their jobs throughout the season; 7and 8 WHEREAS, Head Coach Randal Bertrand and Assistant Coach Dawn Broussard 9have instilled an ethic of winning in these young women athletes, and have demonstrated 10leadership and motivational skills that have led to success both on and off the court for the 11Gueydan Honeybears; and 12 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize the well-deserved title the Honeybears 13have earned; to commend the team for the ability they have displayed, particularly at the 14most difficult level of competition; and to express sincere and heartfelt congratulations to 15the team members and coaching staff for the merits earned and the sportsmanship shown 16while achieving the highest state girls' basketball honor possible for Gueydan High School. 17 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 18commend and congratulate the athletes, coach, and management staff of the Gueydan High 19School girls' basketball team for winning the 2017 Class A state basketball championship, 20capping off a truly spectacular season; and does hereby recognize the team's outstanding 21performance and the pride and honor they have brought to their school and community. 22 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted 23to Head Coach Randal Bertrand.
