HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 54

A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To designate Tuesday, May 9, 2017, as Kingsley House Day at the legislature.
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Kingsley House and to designate Tuesday,
May 9, 2017, as Kingsley House Day; and
WHEREAS, Kingsley House, founded in 1896, serves individuals of all ages and
offers services to reduce, alleviate, and eventually eradicate poverty throughout the greater
New Orleans area; and
WHEREAS, the mission of Kingsley House is to educate children, strengthen
families, and build communities; and
WHEREAS, Kingsley House launched the very first kindergarten and summer school
programs in the state and has promoted early childhood development and education in the
form of the Head Start and Early Head Start preschool services, Educare New Orleans, and
the Parents as Educators program; and
WHEREAS, a youth services department provides Summer Camp programming for
children ages five to twelve; this program promotes psychosocial skills, creative arts,
success, and respect for others while offering tutoring, mentoring, and drug abuse and
violence prevention activities; and
WHEREAS, Kingsley House Community Counseling Center Services offers various
programs geared towards mental health counseling and therapy, and the Adult Services
Program provides assistance to vulnerable senior citizens and medically fragile adults; and

WHEREAS, the Community and Supportive Services Program offers
comprehensive, community-based services that connect individuals and families to
community network supports that encourage personal growth, enhance knowledge, increase
awareness, promote self-sufficiency, and support the overall well-being of the individual,
the family, and ultimately the community; and
WHEREAS, Kingsley House merits special recognition for providing community
services for over one hundred twenty-one years and for making a significant impact on the
lives of the thousands of children and families that it serves annually.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
designate Tuesday, May 9, 2017, as Kingsley House Day at the legislature.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Keith Liederman, Ph.D., chief executive officer of Kingsley House.
