COMMENDATIONS: Commends the Florien Lady Blackcats girls' basketball team upon
winning the 2017 Class B Championship
1 A RESOLUTION
2To commend the Florien Lady Blackcats girls' basketball team upon winning the Louisiana
3 Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Girls' State Basketball Championship, Class B.
4 WHEREAS, under the tutelage of head coach DeWain Strother, Florien High School
5has had a storied girls' basketball program for many years winning over one thousand games
6since 1983, including five championships, five runners-up, and sixteen state tournament
7appearances; and
8 WHEREAS, the 2016-2017 Lady Blackcats continued that tradition with an overall
935-2 season gaining them a place in the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Girls' State Basketball
10Championship, Class B; and
11 WHEREAS, during the tournament the Lady Blackcats defeated Midland 74-40,
12Hathaway 72-54, and Holden 62-58, avenging the Blackcats' loss in last year's championship
13game, placing them in the finals against Anacoco; and
14 WHEREAS, during the championship game, Florien took control of the game from
15the outset with six unanswered points at the beginning, while Anacoco fought back to lead
16by two points at halftime but they could not sustain the lead as the Lady Blackcats scored
17sixteen unanswered points at the beginning of the second half putting the game out of reach
18for the Lady Indians from Anacoco with a final score of 53-38; and
19 WHEREAS, the Lady Blackcats were led during the 2016-2017 season by Aja Law,
20their six-foot center who averaged twenty points a game with eleven rebounds, joined by

1usual starters Ashlyn Anthony, MaCayla Miller, Morgan Miller, and Kendra Richardson,
2and a strong bench in Katie Alford, Alasia Gipson, Kylee Strother, and Destinee Strother.
3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
4Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Florien Lady Blackcats girls' basketball
5team upon winning the Louisiana Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Girls' State Basketball
6Championship, Class B.
7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
8to Coach DeWain Strother of Florien High School.
